Hello WDC Community, newbies, tweenies and oldbies! I am happy to be a guest editor today. I will be addressing some recent questions and how to's!
Newbies are not just new writers, or beginners but refer to all who are NEW to the WDC Community!
"New members are an especially important part of the creative writing environment at Writing.Com. Newbies, as they are lovingly called, bring both fresh ideas and raw (or even seasoned) talent to our writing table."
"The best advice we can give is to interact with other members." from "New Members -- Our Newbies" In "Writing.Com 101"

Questions of the WEEK
Yes, I am back with the answers to some questions that came my way recently and if one person is asking, there must be others who want to know as well. So many magics around WDC!
The big ONE and most common, about one of the most important necessary techy tools:
Ah ...link an item? Bitem? What does that mean?
Linking is an important tool to master and takes a bit of time for some of us to get! I had no idea when I first came here nine years ago! Thank goodness for mentors who took the time to guide me through it.
When you enter contests or want to show someone your work, linking the item from your port is crucial! Or if you want to refer to another author or item in a newsfeed or email, linking is the way to clarity. So let's see how it works:
If you go to the side bar Under WDC Tools: you see: ML help and docs. Click!
Scroll down to find the CREATE LINKS section and check it out. Many examples are in there for easy access.
In a nut shell:
use {} curly brackets
with a word inside: like "bitem", "item" ( for a regular item in your port}
with the 7 digit ID number of your item (everything has a number here, even your reviews, posts, notes on the feed etc.)
and a colon :
{bitem:1750370} would be for a piece of writing in your port.
For shorter link you can use {item:1750370}
For a review: {review:xxxxxxx} x represents the item ID number!
For a forum post: {post:xxxxxxx} The post number will appear in the corner after you submit.
For an image in your port: {image:xxxxxxx}
Here are some expert links to help you out! Our authors love to help newbies.
"Invalid Item" here you get a lovely visual and can use the forum to practice!
"Create Links & Use WritingML"
"How to Make WDC Item Links"
Click on the plus sign at the right hand top of one to save it to your Favourites for easy access if you like.
You can do that with authors you like too.
How do you link Authors?
I have seen some really struggle with this one. Just be aware that some authors may have a different USERNAME than the HANDLE you see on the site. For example, My handle is Eyestar but my username is 1starsong.
It it the USERNAME you use to link someone: {suser:1starsong} shows up as eyestar~* .
It may seem complicated for some of you, at first, but hang in there. Once you see the magic in small steps, you won't forget and you will be a Bitem wizard! Just to show you I am still learning as well. I found out there are 13 ways to link an item! "Item Linking ~ 2.#4"
Where do I find reviews that I have done?
So many ways!
1. Go to your own portfolio. Check under REVIEW Tab: you can find given and recieved reviews! You can even see which ones you have NOT responded to.
2. Go to MY ACCOUNT on the left side Bar of the screen: Under My Activities: click Reviews and Feedback.
3. If you belong to a group where you do reviews and affiliate to the group: Go the the group page to the dropdown Tool Menu and search Affiliated Reviews.
That's it for me. Keep on asking questions until you discover the path! Help is out there! Have fun even when flying by the seat of your pants like I did!
Thanks for reading and have fun linking as you write on!
