Can Preconceptions be a Hindrance?
Have you ever read the back jacket of a book, been excited, and then been incredibly disappointed by what's inside?
So, this comes in many forms. The previews of movies that look absolutely amazing! And then the movie is a dud. Or a jacket cover on a book that just makes you want to sink your teeth into every page! And then five chapters into the book, you have completely lost interest.
Sometime it seems like either the preview or the jacket cover misrepresent the story line completely, or they give you everything that is good, and leave nothing for discovery. This can be equally true for the stories that we post on WdC. We need to be careful to represent our stories appropriately, so we can draw in the appropriate readers.
Except, here, it can be the other way around - our brief description can be so disappointing that no one comes in to read our story. This can be especially true for mystery stories. There are 90 characters to draw people in. (That's less than twitter!) You need to make sure you represent your story well to bring in the readers you want and increase the number of people that see and review your story. Hook, line, and sinker.
As some advice, be sure that your brief description is actually about your static item. Many use this slot to ask for reviews, or to make other comments. But the best way to get a review and to get someone to read your story is to actually hook a reader with a great brief description. You can always solicit reviews by posting on review forums or in-and-outs and requesting them - it is not necessary to ask for this in the brief description. |
Here are some static items that use the brief description as it should be used and describe the item appropriately.
