Letter from the editor

Although it doesn’t yet feel like it, we have entered Spring here in the UK. In some other nations, the trees will soon be filled with the colours of Autumn. Yet there are those of us, wherever we live, who have heeded the warning that Winter is coming. And now it’s here. Well, almost...

On the 14th of April, we’ll get to watch the first episode of the final season of Game of Thrones. It’s been a long journey. For some, it’s been very long – those who picked up the first novel in the series all the way back in the 90s. I am one of the people who has read all the A Song of Ice and Fire books that have been published thus far. When the TV series was released, I watched the first half of the first episode and had to close my eyes so many times that I gave up. Recently, however, I decided to give it another go. I still have to close my eyes on occasion, as I’m not too good with gory bits, but I have to say that they’ve done a good job adapting the novels to the screen and the story itself is captivating.

If you are wondering what all the fuss is about – Game of Thrones is not your usual fantasy tale. It’s political. It’s filled with intrigue. It’s clever. The author, George R. R. Martin has studied history and has a true insight into humanity in all its glory and depravity. This isn’t a sweet tale. A happy ending is not guaranteed. Along the way, characters you have grown attached to may well meet a gruesome end. Don’t expect an easy read or a relaxed viewing experience. Don’t expect to be able to watch it whilst playing with your phone – you’ll miss out if you don’t pay attention. Game of Thrones isn’t dumbed down. In this day and age, I find that refreshing.

During the last season the series caught up with the books that have been published thus far, and surpassed them. Readers are still waiting for the final two novels in the series. That means that nobody, apart from the author and those involved in the production of the TV adaptation, knows what’ll happen in the final episodes. No doubt, we all have our favourite remaining characters. We all have our theories. We all have an opinion on who should end up on the Iron Throne, and who is likely to end up there, and if there even will still be an Iron Throne. Feel free to share your thoughts and ideas in response to this Newsletter, and we can see whose predictions will end up being correct. *Smile*

One of the things I like so much about Game of Thrones is that whilst it’s brutally honest about the roles and fates of women in Medieval times, there are strong female characters who are crucial to the storyline and, no doubt, to the final outcome. Two of my favourite characters are Arya Stark and Brienne of Tarth. For those who haven’t read/watched Game of Thrones, Arya is a young girl who was born to be a lady, but has a mind of her own. Due to circumstances she is thrown into one difficult situation after another, needing strength, courage and perseverance in order to survive. Brienne has become a female warrior in a man’s world and is one of the bravest and most honourable characters in the entire story. I wish for a happy ending for the both of them. I hope that Arya will fully reunite with her direwolf and leaves behind the darkness she’s found herself in. And I hope that Brienne will end up with Jaime Lannister, as unlikely as it seems.

Yes, there are wolves. Big ones. And dragons. There are battles. A clash of politics and a clash of religions. There is love and heartbreak. Honestly, if you haven’t yet given this story a go, don’t miss out.

For the rest of us, the wait is almost over. Let’s raise our banners and keep our fingers crossed for our favourites. Winter’s here, but surely Spring will follow...
