Detail makes the difference between boring and terrific writing. Itβs the difference between a pencil sketch and a lush oil painting. As a writer, words are your paint. Use all the colors.

Amazing. Awesome. Extraordinary. Spectacular. The list could go on and on of words that try and describe something that takes our breath away. After a while though, during our busy lives, we stop thinking about the simple things that are honestly amazing.
We live in a day and age of science and information. Kindergartners are learning things that their parents didn't learn until high school. A plant has cells that create food for itself. Ants and bees have complex matriarchal societies. Rainbows are a refraction of the moisture in the sky that creates a spectrum of colors.
And yet, it is so easy to forget about those things until one day we realize how totally cool it is that the world was created this way. We live in a complex, amazing world where the very makeup of the earth is so complicated we could never even hope to discover it all.
I'm writing this on the way to work, hooked up to a global data system that runs through my cell phone. The morning is absolutely amazing - the skies are blue and cloudless, the smog has not yet descended over Atlanta, and the colors of the trees are amazing in contrast against the sky. It's amazing that I can be riding in my car, sitting next to my husband, connected to airwaves that I know are there but can just forget. It seems like magic that the simple addition of an antenna to my computer can make it function anywhere my phone does.
When I stop to consider all this - the man-made wonders and the Divine-made wonders, I become more sure of a master plan. That we are not an accident. That we all have a purpose. Just think about all the odd creatures of the earth, those that walk land like the giraffe or those that live under the sea like the blowfish. How could we not be sure that we were created on purpose by a Being with a sense of humor?
Today, look around you and let yourself be amazed at the things around you. When I started thinking on this, I found that I was amazed that humans could devise a way to get running water to the 4th floor of my office building and even above. I don't understand how it happens, but I know I am able to wash my hands.
Let's forget that the things we see every day are normal and start to be amazed at them again. What do you see that amazes you?
