Many people in the modern world have the problem of too much, "stuff." How many of you have things that you don't really use, but don't want to get rid of either? Where do you keep these things? Are they in an attic, basement, garage, shed, or commercial storage unit?
My parents, who grew up in the midwestern US during the Great Depression of the 1930s, had a phobia of throwing anything away. My mother-in-law, who grew up in England during rationing in World War II was the same way.
For some people, the desire to keep anything that might be of value "someday" turns pathological in the form of hoarding. Hoarders may feel that their possessions have some sort of hold over them, which prevents them from parting with anything.
Many people don't know exactly what is contained in their collection of unused stuff. In some cases, storage collections might contain some forgotten items of real value. Some items might have had no monetary value when placed in storage, but time and rarity have reclassified them as antiques. Others, such as old photos and documents, might have no monetary value, but might be priceless for family members. Others might be instrumental in solving decades old crimes.
Here are some examples of stored items that might turn out to be unexpected treasures:
A strange old key
Books
Faded photos
Old letters
A jewelry box
Dolls or other toys
Old coins
A diary
Newspaper clippings
Clothing (and the items in the pockets!)
You can probably think of others!
Something to try: Write a mystery story that includes items found in storage.
