About This Newsletter

Quote for the week: I think, at a child's birth, if a mother could ask a fairy godmother to endow it with the most useful gift, that gift should be curiosity.

Letter from the editor

Imagine finding a mysterious package on your front porch. You didn’t see the person who left it, and there is no card. What could be in it? In a mystery story, there are many possibilities, some wonderful and some terrible, depending on your story. Here are just a few:

Photos

A strange book

A bomb

A ring

A map

A video or audio recording

A scarf

Money

A letter

A birthday cake

A bottle of wine

How many ways can you think of to integrate one or more of these mysterious gifts into a mystery story. Remember, the gift doesn't always have to be something bad. Maybe something that appears to have ominous overtones could actually be good (or the opposite!)

Something to try: Write a mystery story that includes a mysterious gift.
