Three Main Ingredients Make Seven Different Recipes (types) Of Love

A professor at Yale has an interesting theory about love. Dr. Robert Sternberg sees love as a triangle and saw liking, passion and commitment as the points on that triangle. Mix them up into different ratios and you get seven different types of love.

As writers we can use this information to help us take our characters to a certain type of love, to make sure we have all the ingredients for the type of love we want to portray or even show that love can be great (or hard) no matter what type of love a couple shares.

First remember that the missing ingredient doesn’t have to be totally missing. It can be present in small amounts.

Take: Friendship alone and you get Liking.
Take: Passion alone and you get Infatuation
Take: Commitment alone and you get Empty Love.
Mix: Liking and Passion and you get Romantic Love.
Mix: Liking and Commitment and you get Companionate Love.
Mix: Passion and Commitment and you get Fatuous Love.
Mix: Liking, Passion and Commitment and you get Consummate Love.

The longer lasting types of love are dependent on what stage of life the people are in. If they are in early adulthood then Companionate and Consummate Love are the longer lasting types. If the people involved are in middle or late adulthood then you can add Empty Love to Companionate and Consummate Love.

For all types of love it takes work to maintain or improve the quality of the relationship and Dr. Sternberg does also mention that the levels of each ingredient can change over time to become a different type of love. This can be for the better or worse, depending on what type of love each person in the couple sees as ideal for themselves.

Hi Red Writing Hood,

As usual a great NL. Enjoyed reading about how various people show their love. For R.E.LaFevre, I'd like to say: you can show your character expressing his love for his girlfriend by just doing everyday simple things. Facts say more than words!

Take care, AuntyNelly *Smile*
