Letter from the editor

Last month my newsletter topic was about reviewing. It generated a lot of discussion on the subject from the mailbag and the Newsfeed. I thought I'd pursue this important resource further.

You've posted your first story on Writing.Com. Then you receive your first review of that work. What do you do now?

Some of the review may not be what you want to hear. You have a decision to make. You can take what the reviewer says and make any changes you feel appropriate. Or, you can ignore what the reviewer has told you. But I submit, the one thing you should not do is berate that reviewer. Just remember, a review is just one person's opinion at that point in time. Check out the following essay:

Reviewing on WDC is a very well documented resource. Type "reviewing" into the Search window, select the All of WDC box and you'll find more than 500 essays, articles, and items on the subject of reviewing. Obviously, one might spend many hours, days or weeks perusing things Reviewing.

I've selected some essays on various aspects of reviewing from some long-time members (more than ten years of membership) who are very articulate on the importance of reviewing. Yes, I know it's a good bit of reading. But they're worth the effort if reviewing is important to you.

First, check out this entry in "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window.: "Guidelines To Great ReviewingOpen in new Window.

Once you've read the first item on our reviewing 'book' list, try your hand at the quiz: "Guidelines to Great Reviewing - The QuizOpen in new Window.

Now there are still more than 500 items that contain pearls of reviewing wisdom. While I chose articles written by more established members, don't discount essays on reviewing written by our newer members.

Remember you can take what you want from someone's opinion about your work. Or leave it be.

Best of luck with all your writing ... and reviewing endeavors.

Ask & Answer

Thanks for spending time with me today. If you liked what you read (or if you didn't), please take time and drop me a line. I'd love to hear your ideas.

From the mailbag:

From hbk16: Reviewing is not only beneficial for the writer but for the reviewer as well. I always learn new things from my reviews.I learn about people, cultures and how to improve my English according to the native one. Reviewing should be positive ever though the writing does not respond to the standard of both the language and the assignment. In this latter case it is most often difficult to find the right words in order to advise the writer without hurting him. This is a featured issue indeed!

         Very true.

A discussion from the Newsfeed: Rather than re-type all the notes from the members who took part, I'll just provide the note. *Wink*
