Letter from the editor

Bring on the Creepy and Gory!

It's Horror Scary month at Writing.com. A time when all the ghoulies and goblins come knocking at your door. It's a time of haunting robot puzzles in our WDC Messenger. (gift points, yay!) You'll also be haunted by the random ghosties! It's also the time for entering lots of contests with horror, scary and frightening themes. You're action adventure authors, bring on the adventure, show us the action!

Think about adding your own special twist to the prompt and really bringing your *A* game to the table. Horror usually needs a LOT of descriptive work. Do you have a healthy list of ghoulish and gory phrases? How many ways can the blood and gore drip and pool around your characters? Suspense is your ace in the pocket.

So, prepare yourself! Spend time brainstorming story ideas, working in a story prompt can be pretty easy if you already have a plot line in mind. If not, be sure the story you write to the prompt is rich in description and lots of yummy gore. I suggest while looking at the prompt, think about what everyone else will be writing and write something with an intriguing twist. A contest judge will be a bit numb to the same story over and over if there are a lot of entries. Write something that stands out!

So, be prepared for Horror/Scary month and Write On!

A grave encounter.
#2186764 by Bilal Latif Author IconMail Icon

Excerpt: The owner of that mouth released him and recoiled, his eyes glinting in wrinkled sockets. He spoke. “Thought you were dead.” His cracked lips parted in a nervous smile that revealed yellow teeth Bootsy had just mistaken for stalactites. “I’m Marv.”

Bootsy stared at Marv’s ragged clothes and thinning hair and said, “You got bad breath, man.”

The Black Cape And Top Hat Open in new Window. (13+)
A man's memory of a terrible event in his youth still haunts him
#1886133 by Angus Author IconMail Icon

Excerpt: That would have been enough for anybody, but what he saw next, or at least what he thought he saw next, was the figure of a man with a black cape and wearing a top hat closing the closet door behind him.

Excerpt: I hate women. All of them, but I love their hair. The kind I love best is long, straight, and black. When a woman lets down her hair and rolls her head, I can’t help but take in a deep breath as her hair swishes the air. Aaahh, the aroma...

Excerpt: Michelle Stewart watched with dawning horror as Alexander, her new boyfriend’s nine-foot-long reticulated python undulated, just as nicely as you please, into the bedroom.

Dark Passenger Open in new Window. (18+)
A simple uber ride turns to a reunion of bizarre proportions.
#2200206 by Dalimer Corwyn Author IconMail Icon

Excerpt: I better watch myself before I make too much attention for myself. My window of opportunity grows thinner by the passing second. Time is of the essence. It has been six minutes since I have intercepted the call for an uber made by a Clarissa Montgomery.

I come upon her. My how much she's grown since a little tater tot clinging to my leg. I doubt she'd remember me. I just hope this is the right one; something in my core says it is. Call it instinct.

Trapped! Open in new Window. (18+)
Six strangers find themselves trapped in an elevator. Then things get worse!
#1098966 by Just a Penguin Author IconMail Icon

Excerpt: As the elevator neared the tenth floor, it began to slow down. Ralph frowned and glanced at the panel. No, no one had lit the number ten button. Maybe someone on the tenth floor would be getting on, he mused. The elevator jolted to a stop.

"What the hell!" John exclaimed, "We're between floors!"

Written for SCREAMS!! Sal finds her long lost son...
#2182852 by IceSkatingSugarCube Author IconMail Icon

Excerpt: “And this will help find my boy?” I dared speak.

She nodded and studied me with a knowing look. “This will attract the demons. You’ll see.” Then she pointed at the price tag. Fifty bucks. I knew it would be hard for me to spend that much without Billy knowing. I had to try, though.
