About This Newsletter

How do you celebrate during the darkest time of the year? Do you decorate your tree with lights? Do you light candles? The return of the light brings us hope, be it for our life here on Earth, or beyond.

This week's Spiritual Newsletter, then, is all about love and light.

Letter from the editor

Merry Christmas, everyone! Happy Hanukkah! Happy Yule! I hope that you are having a wonderful time. *Smile*

I'm having a quiet one this year. When you live in a different country to your family, as I do, it is difficult to get together to celebrate. Moreover, my husband's family's mostly gathering in Scotland to celebrate, leaving just his mom and us, and a younger brother who has to work over Christmas but who would really love to have Christmas dinner on the 27th. Which we will give him, of course. We are fortunate to have plenty of food in.

We have four-month-old kittens who'd absolutely destroy a tree, so that's out of the question. For the same reason, we haven't really decorated. We've seen all the Christmas movies too many times for them to hold any appeal. We've played some of the songs but they, too, have been heard over and over before. We're not feeling Scroogey, but perhaps when you get to a certain age you've been there and done that and the holidays lose some of their magic. Yet, I can't imagine this cold, dark month (or, cold and dark where I live) without them. I believe that we need the love and light of these special days.

I sometimes wonder what life was like for our ancestors, way back when we lived in caves. I imagine that during the coldest, darkest days they'd gather around the fire, sharing songs and stories, awaiting the return of the light. When the days lengthen, hope renews. Whilst Spring may be far off, at least we're headed in that direction. That hope is a big part of those festivities that bring a light in the darkness, at least in my opinion. A hope of something better, be it in this life on Earth, or beyond.

Some of you may be reading this and shaking your head because it's Summer. You may be feeling under-represented in all those movies and songs I mentioned above. I wouldn't blame you. Do you have a festival/celebration when it's cold and dark that serves a similar function? If so, let me know! It would be interested in hearing about it.

Whilst here at my place we may not be planning anything much, I am certain that we will have a pleasant time. We may play some games. We've been invited to hop over to some friends. And with kittens around, nothing is ever boring! Especially not when they catch the scent of turkey...

You and I will see the other again in the new year – and new decade! In the meanwhile, I wish you blessed holidays, filled with health and joy and laughter. May the season bring you love and light.
