Meeting Deadlines

I am a procrastinator by nature. I leave everything to the last minute. If I don't have a deadline, it's likely it won't happen. This is true in every aspect of my life, but particularly with my writing. Deadlines help me overcome this character flaw. If I have a writing goal with a date attached, I am more likely to write.

Contests are a great way of giving myself writing deadlines. They encourage me to be creative and stretch my writing muscles as well as giving me the structure I need to actually finish something! My contest entries don't always result in something I would like to publish, but they do keep me in the habit of writing. If I don't write for a period of time, it's harder to pick the pen up again.

Contests on Writing.Com come in a variety of forms. If you are like me, and you need a deadline, they offer motivation for writing. I try to fit one or two into my schedule each quarter. That gives me time to focus on my ongoing writing projects as well as keeping me writing when I hit a roadblock with those stories.

If you need inspiration or motivation, review the contests on "Writing Contests @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. and get writing!

Until Next Time,
