I recently noted this on the Newsfeed. It is a note filled with great hope and conviction that I would do all of these mentioned steps effortlessly and naturally without any hiccups along the way.
"I'm being forced to upgrade to Windows 10. After many years of perfect harmony between me and my Windows 7, alas, tomorrow the support for it ends.
I have two Windows 7 laptops, the heir and the spare of my creative musings. Now, I must take on the task of removing the Hard Drive from the eldest one, and placing a new Hard Drive in for the upgrade to 10. I've got my software ready to clean install the 10. If that goes smoothly, I'll be able to transfer my files from the old hard drive to the new one. Plus, I still have the Windows 7 hard drive, just in case.
When that's complete, I get to do it all over again on the younger Windows 7 laptop. Hours of fun, folks!
OBTW, I had such faith in getting everything together in time to make the big change-over that I broke down and bought a new laptop. That one will arrive tomorrow! Now, I'll have an updated heir, spare and spanking new model -- which, before I use it, I'll immediately stick that Windows 10 upgrade tool into its guts, and make a clean install of the operating system without all those added programs on new models, that are free-trial this, free-trial that, bulky, obnoxious, infomercials of data! Out they go. So, that's how I'll be spending the next couple days.
See ya, around -- unless I get lost in the belly of the digital beasts!"
Day 2, The Reality:
Of course it didn’t turn out to be a perfect onetime installation. I retrieved the Windows 7 Hard drive, easily enough. Only 8 screws away from installing the new one and then clean installing Windows 10 from my flash drive. I must interject that I had received professional guidance via the phone and texts from my son. So, the day after my huge announcement on the Newsfeed, I made my move, removed old, installed new, and ... Nothing! The flash drive was preparing to install Windows 10 and a message popped up that I had no driver to place it inside my laptop.
What do you mean there’s no storage drive to install that idiot W-10?!! I gave you a new hard drive. Are you too good for my Hard Drive?
At the clubhouse that night, Web-Son called me after work. He told me to redo all the steps of removing and replacing the hard drive to rule out a faulty new drive which happens one in a hundred times. I’m pretty impressed by the fact that I, WebWitch, might be a one in a hundred person out there in the world. Perhaps even one in a thousand? My son could have underestimated those odds. But I digress. If I took out the new one and placed the old “7“ hard drive back in, we know that was working and would mean bad new drive. But, if my “7” failed to be noticed, then it would be a faulty motherboard connector wire, which he guaranteed me was a cheap replacement item. Feeling a little deflated in the ego department for possibly screwing-up a pretty simple task, I returned home and decided to give it another try the next day.
Next Day:
I drank copious amounts of coffee and prepared for the task ahead. I placed-in Windows 7 drive and screwed two of the eight screws to temporarily hold it in place. When I turned the laptop over, a tiny black screw fell out! Hmmm, did I fail to screw the screws with sufficient screwing without going to the point of stripping it? If you can understand those words that came out of my mind right now, I applaud you! Anyway, I normally screw to perfection, so I doubted that I screwed-up!
I started-up the computer and voila! It worked. And, both the screws I screwed were still screwed on nice and tight. I have no idea where that other little screw came from, but, it’s gone and all’s well with my computer. The next step was to remove the “7” and replace it with the new Hard Drive. This time I had hope. I even went the full 8 screws so I wouldn’t have to screw with it again if it did work.
IT WORKED!!! I can’t say for sure that it was the stray black screw that was screwing with its operability -- but that’s going to be my story. And, I am sticking to it!
Now, on to doing the younger computer’s upgrade, and clean-installing the brand new Windows 10 Laptop with the “lite” version minus all the pre-installed junk programs that are always included as free trial offers. "Nope! I hate you, I’m not paying for you, go away, stop clogging my virtual channels! I don’t even want to bite that bit about free." I'll get Firefox installed and choose my own word processing program -- free of course, and video playing software -- free again, and my favorite free anti-virus software, Malwarebytes. I am one happy witch. The fact is I did it! I bet you're not one bit surprised. Hey, it's not like it's math or anything like that.
