A demon and werewolf story
David sighed once, that and the shallow breaths of three people were all that I heard for what seemed like forever. I didn’t try to talk or say anything; I still wasn’t sure what had happened. My head was buried deep into his chest, making his shirt wet my from my tears. As I held onto him, I thought that I should have heard at least two sets of foot steps, though I didn’t hear any.
The movement that told me hat I was still alive and awake slowed and stopped. Then there was a soft knocking sound, though it was probably more like a loud banging noise because my ears were muffled by his shirt that I was still grasping. A lock clicked and I barely heard the sound of a door swing open with a creek.
Someone or something was clawing my limp form away from him; I dug my nails harder into his chest so I wouldn’t be dragged away. I felt David’s hand on my hair, telling me to let go, I finally listened to his soft voice and loosened my grip. My hand flew up and I saw his brilliant smile that calmed me instantly.
As I gazed around, I saw a wooden, dining table that seated six, three of those were already filled with three men that had apparently been playing some kind of card game but had stopped to stare directly at….me. One of them, the one on the edge of the table, had a mullet hawk which is a mix between a mullet and a Mohawk. He had some horizontal sideburns too. I noticed that he seemed older than the others; the colors in his hair are bleach blond and brown.
The one to the left of him had short brown hair that poofed up a bit, and it looked like he had tried to slick it back. He was the closest to me so I saw that his eyes had that same crystal blue as David’s eyes. The next one, which was sitting across from he second one, had blond hair that stuck out like a yellow feather-duster. These two seemed about the same age, though the blond one seemed a bit younger, maybe by about two or three years.
My gaze drifted from the table to the person that had been trying to pull me away, she had blond hair with layers of brown in it. Her mouth was in a tight pinch like she was holding back a lecture or something. She saw me looking at her and she changed her look to helpful and trusting. I noticed that my hands were no longer holding on to David and he set me down in a chair that leaned against the wall nearest to us.
“It’ll be okay, you’ll see.” It was that girl’s voice again, only this time I could see her. She wore a black shirt with a dark tan color jacket, and a smile bigger than skyscrapers in the city. Her hair was a bright red like a strawberry; it was really long and tied back in a ponytail.
“So…you’re the manager’s daughter, aren’t you? Your name is Alexa, right?” the guy with the mullet hawk asked, I nodded helplessly.
“Lexi” I murmured quietly, I hated when people called me Alex, it’s just I hadn’t had enough courage or strength to correct anyone before now. The older women’s mouth turned into a smirk when I said it.
“Okay, Lexi, my name is William; I’m David’s somewhat father.” The mullet hawk man informed me, I gazed at David for an explanation but he just shrugged.
“I’m Hunter.” The feather-duster guy added, smirking happily. Then he pointed to the brown haired one and continued, “He’s Adam.”
“Hey!” Adam looked about to smack Hunter for not letting him introduce himself.
“Boys!” William barked and both of them fell silent. I smiled awkwardly at each of them in turn to show I had understood who they were.
“I’m Sam!” the red head announced cheerfully, she seemed so full of energy; it was almost unbearable to watch her. All of our eyes then turned to stare at the older woman, who seemed more interested in the blinds right now. William made a coughing sound and she looked up, then down, at me.
“I’m Marisa.” She finally said, though her voice was gritty and seemed angry. Is she angry that I am here? Well, if so, then I would just go back to Richard’s house now. Oh my, Richard!
“What about the dinner?” I asked, turning to David anxiously. He made a groaning sound and rolled his eyes, but still turned to his family.
“Richard’s cooking dinner and he invited all of us to come, so will you?” he directed the last part, I could tell, towards Marisa.
“Sounds great!” Adam, Hunter, and Sam agreed in unison and William nodded, then all six of us stared at Marisa, waiting for her answer.
“Mom, come on, you know Richard will bring it out to you if you don’t come.” David reminded her which she flinched at and finally nodded. The way he said “Mom” made me think that maybe William was his step dad or something.
I took one more look around and then five of the people disappeared. David smiled at me and then picked me up again, told me not to fall off, I made an angry face at that but he just laughed and began, once again, to run through the corn maze. He held me in his arms tightly so that I would have no chance of falling again.
The wind whistled as David raced through the barely seeable corn. I heard the sounds of owls hooting, mice scampering, and coyotes howling. All of these sounds calmed me into a beautiful trance. I smelled the scent of pollen driving a maddening headache into my head, and then I sneezed to let it all out. Something twitched. My eyes stared at the spot in the corn, trying to make sense of what I had heard, felt, and seen.
“What was that?” I asked, my voice sounding strange and foreign in my mouth. Twitch! That time it came from David and more than one spot in the corn. My eyes narrowed as I searched for some sign of acknowledgement in his eyes. They were full of confusion and something else, but couldn’t quite grasp what it was.
“What was what?” he asked me innocently, I stared at him angrily, he knew what I was talking about, and I could see it clearly now in his face.
“Something moved.” I explained, pointing to the various locations that I had seen movement in. He smiled and shook his head, making his hair swing against my head which I flinched at because I was already uneasy.
“Probably just birds!” David laughed but I crossed my arms and glared immensely, I did not think this was funny. The movement had been made by something human sized but I decided to just let it go because if I said that, he might say it was just a bear or something else. Then I thought about how fast his family had disappeared and smiled, it was probably just them, trying to scare me because the moon is full tonight.
After that, our speed, which had slowed since we were talking, quickened and my body fell back into step with the soothing smells and sounds again but my mind wasn’t calm. I was still angry that he wouldn’t tell me what it really was but I was content, I trusted that he would tell me later when I was “ready” or when he trusted me enough to tell me. My eyes closed to let me relax in his arms and listen to my surroundings pass by as he raced to the end of the maze where his family and Richard should be waiting with food. The very thought of food made my stomach quench in a low growl that my face flushed in embarrassment about.
I heard David’s musical laugh when he saw my face and heard my stomach, I groaned at the next smell that I scented. My mouth growled and my stomach curdled angrily. I opened my eyes, they were glowing with anger and I struggled out of his arms. When I hit the ground, my legs jumped into action and I began running toward the smell. My head never turned around to see if he was following or not because there was no foot-steps. The next thing I saw was a barbeque with about five cow steaks cooking on it.
