A tragic accident... a child killed
“I’ve never seen anything so tragic,” said the paramedic, as she arrived at the scene of the accident.
After fourteen years of being a paramedic, Janine Williams thought she had seen everything. But now, she realized, she had been wrong. Very wrong. Sure, she had been to car wrecks, fires, and other emergencies. The majority of them were quite serious. Never, though, had Janine seen anything like this. It was a hit and run, not an accident.
A vehicle, or rather, what was left of the vehicle, stood overturned in the ditch. The hood of it was smashed into a fence post and the front end of the vehicle was completely dented in. Smoke poured from the engine, ready to catch fire. The front windshield was completely gone and a person couldn’t make heads or tails of what was left of the roof. Groceries, clothing and garbage were strewn all over the road.  Janine spotted a guitar a couple meters away from the car, it’s strings all snapped and tangled together. A huge gouge in the side of it showed that it would have to be replaced. That is, if the owner of the instrument survived.
The thought snapped Janine back to reality. Whoever was in the car was in need of serious help. The firemen were already downing the engine with water so that it wouldn’t catch fire. She rushed to the car and began using the Jaws of Life to get the person out. Kyle Sorenson rushed to her aid, and they continued to attempt to get the person out. The driver was a male, probably twenty-two years old. His face was bloody, and his eyes swollen shut.
“Did you check if he is breathing, Kyle?” Janine gasped. Her voice sounded panicky and she closed her eyes as a wave of dizziness washed over her.
“He’s breathing, but it’s really shallow. Get a stretcher over here and take him to the hospital as soon as possible. He’s unconscious.”
Janine rushed away in search of another paramedic with an empty stretcher. She ran up to Tom Douglas, and tugged insistently on his sleeve. Tom turned to her, and she explained where she needed the stretcher and the patient’s condition.
“Please, hurry, Tom. You might be the one to save his life. Or, help save his life, if he’s still got one.” Janine’s sentence came out in rapid bursts. Tom wheeled the stretcher to the place where Kyle and the man were waiting. They picked the man up gingerly, for fear of disturbing him or making any injuries he might have more threatening.
“Do you know his name?”
“Not yet.” Janine shrugged. “Everyone is searching to find out if there are any more victims. There was another victim, in the passenger seat. It was a boy, approximately twelve or thirteen. He didn’t make it. They’re not sure about witnesses yet, but I think there was a least one. The police are everywhere, it seems.”
