a short story based off of a painting
The Sea Beacon
Based from the painting by Jasmine Becket-Griffith
Written by April Prentice

The captain of The Lady’s Desire sees the storm coming. He knows in his heart, soul and bones it will be a bad one. He turns from the railing and starts to shout orders to his

crew to prepare the ship for the coming storm. As the captains’ men run to do obey the captains’ orders the first drop of rain splashes onto the deck of the ship.

The ship is tossed violently in the wind and choppy seas. The crew hang on for their lives as they are thrown about in the strong winds. The captain runs to the upper deck and

grabs the wheel. He fights the wind and sea for control of his ship. Wave after wave hits The Lady’s Desire, the captain prays that his ship won’t be claimed by the sea as so many

other ships have before him. He hears a ripping sound. He looks up and sees that the sail has started to rip. The captain knows that this will cripple his ship if he can’t get out of the

storm.

He asks the god Poseidon for help. He asks to be shown a way safely through the storm. To the captain’s left he sees a light. The captain can’t believe his eyes. He must be

dreaming, lights just don’t appear out of nowhere on the sea. Just as that though runs through his mind he is hit with a large wave of cold salty sea water. He knows he is very much

awake and if he wants to live to see another day he needs to go towards the lights.

He turns his ship towards the lights, he notices that the lights are steering him out of the heart of the storm. Once the ship is clear of the storm the captain looks at where the

lights are. He sucks in a breath of air. Can it really be her? He never though he would ever see her in all her beauty. He looks upon her face and into her large sea colored eyes. He

sees that it is indeed her. His eyes run over her and sees that her dress merges with the ocean and that her long wavy hair is gently blowing in the wind. There are lights entwined in

her hair and she is holding a light. One more light is hanging from the tip of a delicate wing. He bows to her and she tips her head at him and then she is gone. His ship and crew are

safe because he has been led to safety by the Sea Beacon.
