Urban, student shootings, crime
I am besieged by

the specter of Maxwell’s Demon*

trying to create order out of chaos,

desperately trying to transcend

the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics*

in urban streets

as babies are

hit by stray bullets

that man-made constitutions grant

us 2nd Amendment Rights to bear arms…

"STOP the killings! I want to grow up."

Yet, the babies that die

aimed no weapon;

were not part of a set,

and like Hippocrates: “did no harm!”

I am writing desperately past midnight,

my pen flying over le Tableau Rasa:

Dear Satan,

your plan is the same,

lame punk move you pulled back-in-the-day

in Egypt and Canaan: kill all the women/men-children

before and after ascension to promised lands

from plantation to presidential mansions

to get Moses or Jesus before

first steps,

first speech,

first miracle,

first contribution to society,

taken away in a drive-by orgy of

violence by lead, two-by-four or fist…

I’m not begging, I insist:

STOP the killings! The babies want to grow up.

YOU’VE gotten desperate in these last days!

I’m hip to your scheme of Chalepos.

So, I stiffen my back as

I “stand in the gap” because obviously

you are frightened: and like cowardly bullies,

frightening the will,

killing potential and

I AM

that basket in the Nile River,

that path of flight to Egypt out of which

He will call His daughter or son,

because obviously: there is a savior in our midst!

I’m not begging, I AM standing, and I demand:

STOP the killings! The babies WILL to grow up.

I resist you in the streets, PUNK, and you must flee!

Footnotes

"This know also, that in the last days perilous (chalepos) times shall come." 2 Tim 3:1

I've written a piece titled this before. Have to find it in one of my many journals.

Chalepos (Greek) - "hard to do, to take, to approach; hard to bear, troublesome, dangerous; harsh, fierce, savage"

EbonyJet.com: "Protecting Our Children: Escalating Violence Among Youths

'Stop The Killing' has long been a motto in urban communities where teenagers are victims of violence. However, as the war in the streets escalates, the rallying cry for residents who want to see more action is “Stop The Talking.” The videotaped beating death of 16-year-old Chicago student Derrion Albert renewed outrage over the rising level of youth violence."

* The 2nd Law of Thermodynamics deals with entropy, or ordered systems becoming disordered over time (e.g., the scent of a bottle of perfume dissipating throughout a room). James Clerk Maxwell postulated a “being that could do the impossible,” i.e. order the chaotic system one molecule at a time. This is merely a poetic treatment regarding the thought experiment, and no replacement for hard science. TGP
