Lost but Remembered

Ghostly arms wrap around me
While a ghostly chin rests on my head
As if to offer comfort.
Tears begin to run down my cheeks
As I remember that night.
It happened in a split second.
The screech of tires sounded,
Followed by the the clashing of metal on metal.
I stared at the scene,
Frozen in shock.
Then I screamed your name
As I dashed over.
I slid to a stop next to your door
And looked inside to see if you were okay.
I staggered back,
My mouth agape.
You lay there silently,
With streaks of red on your face.
As quick as I had retreated
I rushed back to your side.
Your breathing was shallow
As you turned your head
To gaze at me with a look in your eyes.
It said ‘I love you.’ and ‘Goodbye.’
I could not accept this,
I did not want to agree.
I begged and pleaded
For you to stay with me.
Regret seemed to flash in your eyes
As they closed slowly.
I saw your hand reach,
But all it grasped was air.
This could not be happening.
It was not fair.
Sirens howled and lights flashed.
But the sound of my shattering heart
Could never be matched.
Now I look at the calendar once again.
Today is a day I will never forget.
For if you had just stayed with me,
Stayed one more day here.
We would have been together
For one complete year.
