Visitation

Thelma looked up from her knitting at the sound of a knock at the front door.

Who could that be at this time of night? she wondered.

She waddled to the door, pausing to pick up the shotgun against the wall behind Old Blue.

The old Bloodhound sniffed the air without bothering to open his eyes; more interested in a snack opportunity than home protection. He could smell the stranger on the front porch but, sensing neither danger nor food, he fell back asleep. He did, however, keep his sixth sense active...just in case.

Thelma opened the door where a shovel, standing vertically with the spade on top said, "I mean you no harm."

"Dag Nabbit!" Thelma said as she began fumbling in her sweater pocket for glasses.

Putting them on she took another look at her visitor who turned out to be a short skinny thing with a huge head and almond eyes.

"You don't mean me no harm? Did I hear that right?" she asked, slightly amused.

"Yes. There is no need to be afraid. I'm on a peaceful mission."

"Humph," she said, "You don't scare me, none."

"It's just that, well, I have a Ray Gun. I don't really know how it works but they make us carry it on these door-to-door visitations," said the being as he drew something from his belt.

A loud blast later, the alien split his attention between the wonder of his suddenly missing gun and the smoke emitting from the stick in Thelma's hands.

Old Blue was there in an instant.

Sensing things had taken a turn for the worse, the alien turn and fled.

"Git 'em, boy," said Thelma.

Old Blue didn't need to be told twice. It looked like he was going to get an evening snack after all.
