Memories of a stray cat who came into our lives
Thoughts about my cat

I wish I could have had a chat
With Oliver my tabby cat
Interesting stories he would have told
About his life before he got old.
He came to us as a stray
On a truly memorable day
Fearful, weak and weary, sad to say
He looked in a really bad way.
He’d been spotted often in Cotmanhay
Same time, same place, every day
My lad, a postie with a sack
Decided at last to bring him back.
Would he stay or would he go?
This is what we wanted to know
We bought him some food in haste
And he must have liked the taste.
Did he note the number on our door
So he could come back for more?
Yes, he returned,
For more sustenance he yearned.
This fishy food in a tin
Convinced him to move in
Now he was here to stay
Loud purrs were his way to say:
Thanks for letting me in
No more will I be straggly and thin.
I’ll try to be a good cat
I’ll help you with this and that.
Your house will be mouse-free
And flies will be caught by me
No other cats will come on our yard
No need to worry, I’ll keep guard.
I’ll sit close to you when you’re feeling unwell
When something’s not right, I can tell
I’ll keep you company when you’re on your own
I know what it’s like to be alone.
For several years Oliver was our pet
That was long ago and yet
Thoughts of him often come to mind
Another like Oliver we’ll never find.
