A Blitz poem inspired by the Hobbit
note: Tolkien generally did not write Blitz poetry preferring more traditional poetic forms, but he once stated that he thought the form's free associatons sounded like something the goblins would sing. To that end, he composed this poem about events which happened shortly before the arrival of Bilbo and Thorin in the Misty Mountains. His publisher may have eliminated it on the grounds that it was uncharacteristically raunchy for a children's book.

One other thing: Most Blitz poems are 50 lines long, but this one is only 40 lines. Some critics have cited this as more evidence that Tolkien was uncomfortable with the form and ultimately did not want it to be published. But others have speculated that Tolkien had hopes of entering it into a poetry contest where 40 lines was the maximum line count
