An ekphrasis poems based on a painting of Edward Hooper |
Lonely is the night Lonely is the night streets silent in darkness, shadow filled sounds hidden in the cacophony of day, revealed to those acquainted with the night Nocturnal creatures roam the pavement with undisturbed grace and surety the night like a friend welcomes those Who know lonely is the night So indifferent and unfettered the night dwellers are neither light nor dark can constraints their rhythmic strides making their way deftly on uncrowded sidewalks the lonely night like a magic cloak The sound of their own footsteps break through the absence of diurnal discord a cancerous vexation for the night dweller an interruption of the lonely night The fluorescent light pours out from the all hours diner to fill the cracks where the street lamp can't reach in stark contrast to the night's shadows Gathered here they are, those acquainted with the night cigaretts, coffee and perfunctory conversation breach the silence of the night Counterman in white linen rattle s and stacks the porcelainwear for the brew that ferments in the stainless steel urns that never seem to empty always at the ready for the nocturnal habitue As a couple or alone they sit, On backless stools sipping and smoking Toying with matches ,reading yesterday tabloid They are well acquainted with the lonely night |
