The cat had watched with pure delight
The canary's cage and caused some fright,
The little bird was no match for his cunning;
You could almost hear the cat a-humming!
The cat's eyes bright and tail a-swishing,
The poor canary sat there, just wishing
That the cat would find some other prey
But it didn't look very good that day!
The cat's paws fiddled with the latch
And soon found he could undo the catch
That held the little bird safely inside;
In seconds the door of the cage swung wide.
The bird flew out and the cat jumped in
Thinking he was just about to win -
And the door slammed shut upon the cage,
Leaving the cat in a fearsome rage!
To the top of the cage the bird did fly,
Looking down at the cat with twinkling eye;
"Gotcha" she thought as she looked below,
For the cat didn't have any place to go.
A "Gotcha" cat is not a happy one;
She sat and pouted and meowed some,
And just to add insult to injury,
Someone took this photograph for all to see!
