Summary of this Book...
This second book of a trilogy is heavier on the YA narration than the first book. Cassel Sharpe has found out that he is not just a regular dude, but has a rare power that only manifests once every few decades. Both the crime families and the Feds want him on their sides. As he goes through his adventure of finding out who murdered his oldest brother, there is a lot of teen angst, dating, kissing, doing stupid things for a crush. While there is a lot of magic and fantasy in this book, it is a real YA novel. Except the love triangle. That's the one missing trope.
This type of Book is good for...
Anyone who read "White Cat" should read this book. Anyone who enjoys YA set in an urban fantasy setting should read it, but must read the first book beforehand.
I especially liked...
I liked that Cassel seemed to be getting some of the things he wants. He successfully got through the adventure at hand instead of stumbling through the story as he did in the first book.
I didn't like...
The books are written in first person present tense narration. While the story did a good job to rope me in, there were many times when that type of style was grating to me.
When I finished reading this Book I wanted to...
Read the third book. I was able to pick it up from the bookstore today, so I might start tonight.
This Book made me feel...
It was an entertaining story. The characters are by now well fleshed out and I feel like their stories are interesting to follow along.
The author of this Book...
Holly Black is a New York Times bestselling author who writes fantasy, YA, and urban fairy tales. Her style is easy to read.
I recommend this Book because...
It has a good, solid plot line that develops logically. While I kind of figured out who dun it well before the end, the denouement was still captivating to read through.
I don't recommend this Book because...
Anyone who really doesn't vibe with first person, present tense, teen angst, YA, or urban fantasy should not read this book.
Further Comments...
"Red Glove" is book two of the "Curse Workers" trilogy. Where the first book stood up on its own, even at the end, this is a book "two" and shouldn't be read out of turn. There are enough explanations to understand the story, but there are too many times when the story feels so much fuller because I have knowledge of the characters from before and I know it wouldn't be like that without having read the first book. So, read in order.
