Summary of this Book...
This is the definitive book about The Titanic disaster. Why? Because the author talked to a lot of the survivors, who were actually there that night on board the ship. It's fascinating and a riveting account of what happened. The passengers all pretty much assumed the ship was unsinkable so staying onboard to be rescued doesn't seem like such a stretch. It was a heated hotel, compared to going out on lifeboats in icy waters. There was a lot of denial going on as to what was happening. I would have assumed a boat like that, making the money that they did, would have lifeboats for all. Sadly, that was far from the case. Also, communication with the other ships was pretty poor. One ship, the Californian was tragically close by, but ignored the distress calls because of petty inter-ship doings between crew members on the communication system. The heroism was with the captain, ship builder and the crew of the Carpathian that came full speed from far away to help with the rescue. A lot of very important people (like John J. Astor and the Guggenheims and Strauses) died so a lot of changes were made. A lot of Irish people died in steerage, too, denied access to rescue because of their lack of status. Shameful. The book held my attention and it is short, but to the point. I wouldn't want to take another cruise after reading it.
