“The Nature Fix” by Florence Williams is an exploration of the science of nature and why humans need nature for our health and mental well-being. I was really stoked when I bought this book because I like non-fiction, science-y type books about topics I enjoy, but gosh … this one was dry. The author visits different countries and talks with several notable researchers and scientists, even participating in several experiments and expeditions herself, but throughout it all, I couldn’t help but feel … bored I guess it the word. I wanted so badly to be interested in the science presented in the book, but it slogged on and was repetitive in several chapters where I wished it would just get to the point. I also missed the feeling of immersion that is necessary with these types of books. I wanted to know the author and I wanted to feel what she felt as she went on this journey to learn about the myriad benefits of nature, but I just felt like I was in a university lecture hall listening to a PowerPoint presentation. I will say the actual science in the book is intriguing and important research, but I wish it was presented in a different way so that it was accessible to a more general audience. There needed to be a more established through-line of the author’s personal story and emotions related to what she was writing about. All in all, a decent science-y book, but could have been so much more engaging. | ||
