Native to the Americas, the turkey vulture (Cathartes aura) travels widely in search of sustenance. While usually foraging alone, it relies on other individuals of its species for companionship and mutual protection. Sometimes misunderstood, sometimes feared, sometimes shunned, it nevertheless performs an important role in the ecosystem.
This scavenger bird is a marvel of efficiency. Rather than expend energy flapping its wings, it instead locates uplifting columns of air, and spirals within them in order to glide to greater heights. This behavior has been mistaken for opportunism, interpreted as if it is circling doomed terrestrial animals destined to be its next meal. In truth, the vulture takes advantage of these thermals to gain the altitude needed glide longer distances, flying not out of necessity, but for the joy of it.
It also avoids the exertion necessary to capture live prey, preferring instead to feast upon that which is already dead. In this behavior, it resembles many humans.
It is not what most of us would consider to be a pretty bird. While its habits are often off-putting, or even disgusting, to members of more fastidious species, the turkey vulture helps to keep the environment from being clogged with detritus. Hence its Latin binomial, which translates to English as "golden purifier."
I rarely know where the winds will take me next, or what I might find there. The journey is the destination.
Whether it's comets or meteor showers--you still have to go outside to view them. My wife tried to get me to go out early this morning (at 2 am) and watch some meteor shower. It was 5 degrees. 5 degrees!
She lasted 3 minutes outside ... and then decided to watch from the hot tub. Apparently, that was the place to be. Said she saw quite a few meteors.
I saw Mommy kissing Dave Ryan- I've been saying that Loeb seems to think being associated with Harvard gives him some creds, but what's actually happening is Harvard's reputation is tarnished by the association.
I honestly wonder why Harvard doesn't give Avi Loeb a rap over the knuckles for his determination to run to the media and attribute this, that and the other to aliens. I've no doubt he's well qualified in his field, but he's starting to come across as a crank.
โIt expanded peopleโs brains to think about how magical the universe could be.โ Yeah. We've moved from

So polygamous men invented monogamy so that they wouldn't have to send their male offspring to die in a war, which would mean the end of that one particular son's possible bloodline.
I wonder what Genghis Khan would have to say to that idea.
I've never given it much thought and I'm not sure how much more enlightened I am after today's lecture... other than picking up a great Oscar Wilde quote which I've now added to my repertoire.
