Candidate Rant

I don't have a favorite political candidate, when I vote--which I do in midterm and presidential elections--I attempt to find the lesser of the two evil and vote for that candidate. When I hear them talk they, glaze over the issues that I find important and, throw verbal stones at their opponents. They accuse their opponents of taking bribes money from special interest or walking their party's line, when they, themselves, are guilty of the same sin. They claim to work for unity, but the only time they do is when the issue is of minor importance in their party's agenda.


I hear their rhetoric of reform, of carrying about the earth, of carrying about immigrants, of overhauling the Medicare and Medicaid systems, and bringing down medical cost. I, also, know that many of them are taking kickbacks from Big Pharma or any other special interest group that is willing to pay them for their vote by pumping money into their campaigns. As the campaign season advances the candidates' bullying of their opponents wax, while they present themselves with blue ribbons for fooling their constituents.

On October 25, 1616, the Dutch discovered Australia.  Open in new Window. Write a journal entry as one of the explorers.

Thank God, we sighted land. I can't remember the last time I was ashore, though I may not want to go ashore here. I don't know what kind of savages we'll encounter, if we encounter any creatures that aren't wild animals. Still, it will be nice to walk on dry land again. The Captain and First Mate haven't said much since the Crow's Nest shouted "Land Ho!" The only one they've talked to is the cook, who probably complained we were running low on salt pork or whatever meat he's been feeding us for last several weeks. I'd like a bit of hen or wild boar, myself. I'd like anything that hasn't been salted and packed in barrels since we set out on this voyage.

I went aft early this morning, and stood on the poop deck. The sun rose clear, there was no red sky, so we don't have to worry about storms today. Afterwards I walked along the port side of the ship, I wanted to get a better view of the approaching land. I couldn't see much. but I did hear birds. They sounded like regular gulls and not albatross, so we're not in for any bad luck when we land. I caught a glimpse of green while I was looking landward, that means fresh water.

This piece of land could indicate this voyage will earn a profit. Not that any of us ordinary sailors will be paid more, still I need to keep my eyes open when we land. There could be something valuable I could slip aboard, and sell when we get back home. Getting off The Eendracht for a few hours will be a good change.

Today in History: The first football team formed in Sheffield, England. Make up your own sport and tell us how it's played.

I'm not a sports fan. The only sports I watch on television, or follow online, are the Olympics. Even with those, there are certain sport I follow closer than others. During the Winter Olympics, I like the to watch the ice dancing and single skating competitions. Sometime will watch the luge, and the skiing competitions. During the Summer Olympics I prefer to watch the swimming events. Sometimes I'll watch the rowing events, but this depends on which country is in the lead. I'll watch the running competitions if I've heard of one of the competitors.


I don't make a habit of watching football, baseball, or soccer; although, I might consider watching a ice hockey. This depends on whether the Las Vegas Golden Knights are one of the teams. Since I live on a fixed income, I doubt I would pay to go the stadium to see them. On the other hand, if someone payed my way in I would attend a game, and root for the Knights.

My sport is called Blogging the World. It is played by two or more writers, who create blogs specifically for this competition. Each participant begins in his/her own city and/or nation. The person has one week to find something unique about the city or nations, and write a 300 word blog post on why the item/location is unique. Grammar and spelling count and errors will be deducted from the from the possible 100 points. For the next entry, the bloggers switch locations. They have to find something unique, but different from the last blogger's entry. The next leg of the competition takes the bloggers to different country to find something unique. The competition continues until the bloggers have visited 100 different countries in on the planet.

The new normal. You have something devastating happen to you and you have to get your life back to normal.
Have you ever had a new normal?

New Normal

At 71 years and 10 months, I've went through a lot of new normal experiences. The death of a loved one or close friend always begins a new normal. You go through the stages of grief, without ever getting over the grief and missing the person. Sometimes the loved one returns in a dream to comfort, and show that in the spiritual world they are still thinking of you. Sometimes a scent simultaneously generates a tear and a smile, this is just another way the loved one is attempting to send comfort from the spiritual world. Eventually, one gets beyond the stages of grief and the new normal is established.

Broken Bone or Sprain

I have never, knock on wood (as my grandmother used to say), broken a bone. I have, however, sprained both ankles. This occurred when I stepped out of a pickup truck into a ditch. This, of course, was my own fault because I wasn't looking where I was disembarking the truck. My right ankle was worse than my left, because I stepped out of the passenger side and my right foot was the first to hit the ground. I learned to look where i was stepping instead of at the person--in the driver's seat--I was talking to.


I suspect that a broken bone is worse. I have know two people who broke bones. The first was a school friend, we attended some sort of school sports function. She stumbled over something and broke her wrist, she was in a cast for several weeks. The other person was my grandmother, she slipped on ice, one winter's day, when she walked out of the house and broke her right arm. Grandpa took her to the hospital emergency room. The doctor set the bone and she went on with her life.

Celebrating Famous Birthday

I have no objection to celebrities friends, families, or fans celebrating their birthday. I don't think any celebrities birthday should be celebrated by the general public. I don't follow celebrities or make a practice of reading celebrity news. I believe celebrities have a right to a personal life, and birthdays are a personal matter. Some celebrities enjoy big parties, with a lot of publicity. Some of them, I suspect, would prefer a small gathering of close personal friends and associates. I went through the "crazy over celebrities" phase as a preteen and teenager. I out grew that somewhere between my eighteenth and twentieth birthdays.


I don't care to "follow them" on Facebook or any other social network. I will read articles about them, if the headline catches my eye and arouses my curiosity. If the celebrity admits dealing with alcoholism, drug addiction, sexual harassment, or a devastating illness--such as Alzheimer's disease, mental illness, or cancer--I have more respect for them. When a celebrity admits to confronting these issues, it focuses publicity on these illnesses, and publicity means ordinary people will be more willing to admit they deal with these problems in their families.

With certain exceptions, I have more respect for celebrities, who acknowledge their religion or spiritual path publicly. The exception in this case concerns their actions, and the way those actions reflect on their chosen faith or spiritual path. While a celebrity can't always choose screen roles that reflect their spiritual path, they can choose the way they act off screen, which is a good indication of what they believe. However, it isn't up to me to judge a celebrity or anyone else; the only thing I can do is to remember them in my prayers.

Perfection

I disagree because there are degrees of perfection in the universe. I look at a rose, I think it is a perfect specimen of a rose. A week or so later, I see another rose, with a different color, and seen in it as a perfect rose. In both cases, I am right because the second rose has a higher degree of perfection than the first rose.


Perfection is a spiritual attribute, a characteristic of the Almighty Unknowable Creator of the universe. Because we cannot know the Almighty directly and our minds cannot understand Divine Perfection, we have to have examples of this. We can see examples of Divine Perfection in the Manifestations of God, who reflect the attributes of God to us. Examples of Divine Perfection can be seen in Christ, Mohammad, Buddha, the Bab, and Baha'u'llah (to name just a few).

In 1964 today, Jean-Paul Charles Aymard Sartre won the Nobel Prize for Literature and turned it down. Make up a reason why.

I have no idea why Mr. Sartre turned down the Nobel Prize for Literature; I suspect it may have had something to do with his political beliefs. Other, logical, reason could be he didn't want the prize, or he was, somewhat, modest when it came to his own writing and felt that the prize suggested he had reach the pinnacle of his literary career. He didn't give a reason, which is his business. Each writer has their own reasons for accepting or rejecting an important literary prize.


Since he didn't give a reason, it doesn't matter why he rejected it. In order, for me to write a coherent reason, I would have to do more research on the gentleman, his family, his family's belief system, his life experiences, his belief systems, and how his beliefs changed over the years. All of these things, either subtly or overtly, play a roll in the choices we make everyday. All of these things, in someway, affects an author's writings. Without knowing, every detail about an author's life (which is impossible) the reason an author accepts or rejects a prize is never obvious.

Since I haven't read enough of Mr. Sartre's words to hazard a guess, I'm leaving that to someone else. His biographer, if there is one, would probably be able to come to a logical conclusion on Mr. Sartre's reasons for turning down the prize.

Emperor of the World

I don't want to be Emperor of the world or even King/Queen of the Hill, because I'm sure there would be someone else out there trying to push me off the throne or the hill. However, if I was made Emperor--in a duly confirmed election--I would graciously accept the job. I would implement a few necessary changes; after appointing cabinet members from the indigenous peoples across the planet.


I would implement universal health care and education. Everyone, over the age of 18 and in decent health, would be require to give a year of service in some nation, other than the one they were born in. Energy methods that don't destroy the environment would be given top priority. Colonies would be established on the moon, Mars, and anyplace else in the solar system where we could construct them. Each family and/or individual would be given a plot of land to grow their own food. Each nation would be required to contribute to planetary security though troops and military vehicles.

I would implement two language classes in school. In one of the classes the native language of the country would be taught. The other class would be in a universal or world language, because one of the problems with the planet is communications difficulties. Another required class would be a life skills and/or survival class because many people don't know how to deal with the real world. Libraries in the grades would be appropriate to the grade level, without banning any book. This would allow young people to be exposed to a wider variety of ideas as they grew and learned how to ask questions and search for truth themselves.

I would implement a virtues class, not a religious class, because virtues cross religious, national, and political boundaries. One of the problems with the world today is lack of knowledge about virtues and lack of practice.

I am looking forward to November, because...
Give us as many reason as you want about why you are looking forward to November.

I am looking forward to November, because the Twin Holy Days will be celebrated in on November 9 and 10. These are my favorites because they celebrate the Birth of the Bab and the Birth of Baha'u'llah. Since 2015, these two Holy Days are celebrated on "the first and the second day following the occurrence of the eighth new moon after Naw-Rúz".3 This means that these celebrations fall on different day each year.


Other days to remember in November are World Citizen Day  Open in new Window. on November 4, Universal Children's Day  Open in new Window. on November 20, Thanksgiving Day on November 22, the Day of the Covenant on November 26, and the Ascension of 'Abd'l-Baha on November 28. Since I'm not planning on participating in NaNoWriMo this year, I'll focus on other writing activities, such as "30-Day Blogging Challenge ON HIATUSOpen in new Window. and different contests.

Write about the weather where you are. Looks like on the weather channel, there's quite a variance among us.

It's a beautiful autumn day here in Las Vegas. The sun is shining through a few fluffy white clouds. The birds are singing, the people are play and making happy sounds. I don't hear any dogs barking or cat meowing, so they are probably happily sleeping, playing, or staring at their people.

Five Things I Like About Myself

This prompt is getting me out of my comfort zone, which is a good thing. I normally don't think about, or even list, the things about myself that I like. I think it has to do with leftover dogma from my childhood. I was taught, or picked up from the way other people talked and acted, that I wasn't supposed to consider the good things about myself. This may be part of my low self-esteem issues, which I still confront.


*Cut* I cut and dye my gray hair once a month. This is a wonderful achievement because it makes me feel younger. I don't like to have my hair too long because it's difficult to wash, dry, and take care of, with short hair I can use a brush to keep it neat.

*Laugh* My sense of humor, which is improving with the years. True there are many who may believe my sense of humor is weird, among other things, that's alright. As long as I can laugh, and find some of things I do amusing it doesn't matter what other people think.

*Quill* I write poetry. I write poetry about anything that inspires me. I have several poems and books in my port that contain my poems. There are two books--"Devotional PoetryOpen in new Window. and "Poem ExperimentsOpen in new Window.--that I had poem to just about every week. The goal is to add poem to them every day or so.

*Spider* I'm confronting and overcoming my fear of spiders. A few days ago, when I went into the bathroom, there was a huge--it looked to me like it was gigantic--spider crawling around the trashcan. I went after the bitch, and killed it.

*Planet* I'm a world citizen, who was born and lives in the United States. I attempt to practice my citizenship through activities in the nation of my birth.

Make a list of 10 things that are on your desk or writing space and why you might need them.

Ten Items on My Desk

The things on my cluttered desk, which was cleaned off once this year. I have to clean it off again because it attracts clutter once I clean it off. I am not going to list the normal things that are common to desks in this day and age (sorry or not about the cliché). Fortunately, I only have to list ten of the things on my desk, because there isn't enough room to list everything.


1. Mail in/absentee ballet for the November Mid-Term election. As a senior citizen, in Nevada, it's my right to receive a mail in ballot. I put the ballot on my desk so that I can fill it out and mail it in this week.

2. Booklet explaining the six state questions on the ballot, with a short explanation of both the for and against arguments.

3. A round pillbox with two cherub on it reading a book. This belonged to my mother, she used it to take her medication with her when she went to work or out to eat.

4. Poems, waiting to be transcribed into "Devotional PoetryOpen in new Window. or "Poem ExperimentsOpen in new Window..

5. The Remembrance of God, a prayer book, so I can pause to say a prayer whenever I feel myself getting distracted or someone request prayers.

6. Writing.com coffee mug, with numerous items--such as pencils and this months rent receipt--in it.

7. Leather medicine bag, a gift from a Native American friend, containing two strings of prayer beads (one string belonged to my mother)

8. A red lace-type pouch containing rose petals from Mount Carmel in Israel, it was a gift from a friend who went on pilgrimage.

9. Baha'u'llah: The One Promised in All Scriptures, one of the books I'm in the process of reading. I keep it on my desk for inspiration.

Ten Things That Make Me Happy

1. Soft Tacos preferably with beef or chicken; however, I will eat them with pork.

2. Cheese burger with everything on it except ketchup.

3. French fries with ranch dressing. Please note, I do not care for ketchup; although, I will consider pasta sauce or salsa.

4. Spanish rice, with either green or red salsa. When I make Spanish rice I usually add ground beef after the rice is cooked. I do this because when my Grandmother made Spanish rice, she fixed it as a main dish and added ground beef. I have not tried ground chicken or turkey; however, I will consider it.

5. Listening to spiritual or gospel music. Some of my favorites are songs I heard as a child when I went to church services at the Southern Baptist Mission in the Smelter Heights in Blackwell, Oklahoma. My other favorites are songs by Baha'i artists. Fortunately, I have access to all these songs on YouTube.

6. Reading. I usually read three different genres of books: (1) Spiritual or scripture, (2) Fantasy, and (3) Science Fiction. On rare occasions, I have been known to read History books and Doctoral Dissertations.

7. Coffee. I usually take my coffee black or with chocolate in it. Sometimes, I add International Delight flavored coffee creamers.

8. Chocolate. I like chocolate in anything. I especially like chocolate cake with ice cream. It does not matter what flavor of ice cream. I will eat any type of chocolate candy; however, I prefer Reese's Peanut Butter Cups.

9. Anything that makes me laugh.

10. Sweet iced tea. I prefer my iced tea with real sugar, when I make it at home. When I purchase it in a store, I buy Arizona Sweetened tea, most of the time. I have been known to purchase other brands of sweetened tea.

The Hobbit
by J.R.R. Tolkien

I've read The Hobbit, at least, twice. And the Lord of the Rings Trilogy a couple of times. I can't decide which book I like best. The thing I like about Mr. Tolkien's books is that I can read them, without worrying about anything except escaping into the plot and the characters. The translation is by Shoghi Effendi, the Guardian of the Baha'i Faith and, the grandson of 'Abd'ul-Baha; therefore, it is a perfect a translation as can be achieved.

First, I'm not normally a person who reads history books; however, The Dawn-Breakers because it is written by someone who was a witness to the events. When Nabil writes about things he didn't personally witness, he transcribes the memories of those who witnessed the events.

This book is composed of short stories about dragons. I've read through the entire book once. I'm keeping it because I'm in the process of reading some of my favorite stories over again, because I haven't decided on which story I like best.

The Seven Valleys is a mystical composition, and was revealed to answer the questions of Shaykh Muhyi'd-Din of Khaniqin, who was a student of Sufi philosophy. The Seven Valleys was revealed before The Four Valleys. Baha'u'llah addressed The Four Valleys to Shaykh "Abdu'r-Rahman of Karkuk. I feel, each Table covers a different aspect of the mystical way, which eventually leads to God.

My taste in music has expanded and my favorites have changed since I turned 60. I still enjoy the music I of my childhood and teenage years; however, today I prefer music that is much more spiritual and relaxing. If I hadn't been limited to five songs, I would have chosen, at least, nine. After meditating on my choices, I whited the list down to five.


My Top Five Favorite Songs:

*Music2* Hummingbird by Seals and Croft.
*Music1* Blowing in the Wind originally performed by Peter, Paul, and Mary. Has been performed by various other artist.

*Music1* We Are One performed by Dan Seals and The Voices of Bahá.

This is a recent addition to my list of favorites. I like this song because it emphasizes Divine Unity and mentions several of the Manifestations of God, including Christ, Muhammad, the Bab, and Baha'u'llah.

This is one of the songs that was originally recorded by Seals and Croft. I like the version performed by Dan Seals and The Voices of Bahá best because it has an entire orchestra playing the music. Another reason I like this song is that it emphasizes the oneness of humanity.

I like this song when I first heard it performed by Seals and Croft, I can't remember how many years ago. From the first, I could feel the spiritual emphasize of the song. It was only later that I realized the song, in its essence, is about Baha'u'llah.

I like this song for two reason: (1) it expresses the oneness of humanity, and (2) it encourages me to sang along with the artists. I like this song the first time I heard it, and I detected a spiritual feeling when it was performed.

How Great Thou Art

I first heard this song performed in the Southern Baptist Mission in the Smelter Heights located in Blackwell, Oklahoma. I love hearing and singing the song from the first. I like it because it glorifies the creation of the universe as a creation of God. It doesn't matter to me which artist sings it because everyone I've heard does justice to the song.

Dictionary Day

I use an online dictionary all the time. I do this for two reasons: (1) I'm online when I'm transposing a story or poem into a document, and (2) I can us the zoom feature on my computer to enlarge the print. It's easier to use the zoom feature than it is to use a magnifying glass with a book. I have three dictionaries book marked on my Web favorites: (1) the English Oxford Living Dictionaries  Open in new Window., (2) the Online Etymology Dictionary  Open in new Window., and the Cambridge Dictionary  Open in new Window.. Why, because the Oxford and Etymology dictionaries were recommended to me, and the Cambridge dictionary is as good as the other two.

It's Monday, October 15, the third Motivational Monday in October 2018. I've had a cinnamon roll and my first cup of coffee, which should be enough motivation to finish this list. Write a list of at least ten things that make you smile and why.

I smile because I'm happy!

It's a beautiful autumn morning here in Las Vegas. The temperature is a cool 60 degrees, with higher temperatures expected when the sun ascends over Sunrise Mountain. Temperatures are expected to get up to about 71 degrees, which means we will have a pleasant Sunday. I'm the only one in my apartment or neighborhood who is up this morning. If anyone else is awake neither they nor their pets making any noise. It is mornings like this that make me smile, because they are calm and tranquil.


Morning prayers make me happy,
they bring a smile to my face,
and focus my mind on the positive.

Logging onto Facebook and, immediately, seeing quotes from the Baha'i scriptures (which have been posted by some of the groups I participate in). Sometimes I simply like the post, while other times I share it or post a comment. My response depends on how I'm feeling, and what's going on in my life at that specific moment. I also like see, reading, and responding to post from my friends across the world.

wakes me on this beautiful Sunday.

Reviewing makes me smile when I read inspiring stories about people or animals. I also enjoy reviewing comedy piece that make me laugh. When I am depressed one of the things that changes my mood is reviewing stories and poems that make me smile or laugh. Some days the only items I review are in the animal, pet comedy, inspirational, spiritual, or religious genres because I know that I will find one or more items to make me laugh, smile, or think.

looking out into the beautiful,
slightly breezy, sunshiny morning
and watching the pigeons scavenging.

Reading articles posed on BahaiTeachings.org  Open in new Window., and in e*lix*ir Journal  Open in new Window., because they include scripture verses and make me think. I especially like reading the poetry in the "e*lix*ir Journal". In addition, I like to read articles on xlink:http://bahaiblog.net/site/}Baha'i Blog{/xlink} and [xlink:https://news.bahai.org/}Baha'i World News Service{/xlink} because I know I can always find something positive, uplifting, or thought provoking.

to go with my morning coffee,
because I am less likely to let my coffee get cold.

I usually place other things in that journal, such as the poems I post to Poet999 - A Butterfly Emerges From Her Cocoon  Open in new Window., thoughts on articles I read, and scripture verses (usually with my thoughts on the verse or the way it applies to my life).

Memories and Dreams

This week, I read all six article in the series Turning to Your Dreams for Spiritual Guidance  Open in new Window. by David Langness. This weekend I plan to read the two articles in the series Pondering the Deep Wisdom of Dreams  Open in new Window. by Paul Mantle, and, next week, read the six articles in the series Follow Your Dreams & Meet Your Soul  Open in new Window. by David Langness. Any thoughts those articles, or the sacred quotes in those articles, inspire I will place in the entries in "Writing in SnowOpen in new Window., along with my gratitude lists.


Dreams, as I believe I've written before, have played an important part of my spiritual journey. In fact, two dreams inspired my spiritual journal. I wrote about those dreams in "Friday Contemplations on dreams, Gratitude List, and poemOpen in new Window.. The two dreams that began my spiritual journey have stay with through out the years. I didn't know what the meant until I came to Las Vegas and encountered the Baha'i Faith; that's when the dreams became clear to me.

Memories and dreams help an individual move forward in life. Memories are either traumatic or happy, that's why we remember them. We have to learn to deal with the traumatic memories in some way or they stop us from moving forward. I've found the best way to deal with traumatic memories is to pray about them, place them in God's hands, and write about them. I write about the happy memories, laugh, and give thanks for them. I suspect I should be giving thanks for the traumatic memories, as well, because they have helped me learn about myself and strengthened my faith once I placed them in God's hands.

If you could have a/n [inter]national day to name and celebrate however you wished, what would you do?

I already celebrate or commemorate several worldwide Holy Days with the Baha'i Community. I thought about the international days I would name myself, and only three came to mind. Those would be World Citizen Day, Golden Rule Day, and Try A Little Kindness Day; however, two of those are already taken. World Citizen Day  Open in new Window. is celebrated on November 4 and International Golden Rule Day  Open in new Window. is April 5. This leaves me with Try A Little Kindness Day, which, I think, should be celebrate on August 8 the day Glen Campbell  Open in new Window. died.


Glen Campbell faced several challenges in his life. The three main challenges he dealt with were alcoholism, drug addiction, and Alzheimer's disease.14 Therefore, I believe Try A Little Kindness Day should do two things (1) encourage people across the world to be kind to each other, (2) focus international attention on Alzheimer's disease, alcoholism, and drug addiction. The battles Mr. Campbell faced are worldwide problems, which impact families across the planet.

On International Try A Little Kindness Day join the world community in spreading kindness and educating people on Alzheimer's disease, alcoholism, and drug addiction. If you believe you or a relative is afflicted by one of the diseases, find out more about the problem so that you can deal with it. Perform a random act of kindness or donate to an authentic charity that helps individuals with Alzheimer's disease, alcoholism, and drug addiction. Be proactive in showing kindness to your fellow human beings because they are a part of the family of humanity.
