Really enjoyed to read this. Such a sincere remembrance of your childhood. I love how every small light is added up together to illuminate the whole city for the boy. It shows that everyone has impact in the world, sometimes even if unaware of it, every one adds a little fire to light up our world and the young boy's observing and curious eyes did not fail to notice this.
Really enjoyed this playful little poem about such trivial yet such well known and important theme as mismatching socks. Seriously, you put a smile on my lips. Who didn't face this problem early in the morning, while getting ready for work? And so, I think, this poem should relate to practically everyone ;)
Also, if to think a bit beyond the trivial side of it, "I have two socks, one black, one white" can show how sometimes we seem to have in our hands what may seem useful (represented by a pair of socks), but in reality we cannot make any use of it (the opposite colours represent that).
Love it. First of all it is aesthetically pleasant. Love the measured up length of the lines that go from the sun shining to the total loss of hope (last line of 1st stanza) and then at the point of weakness, suddenly a hope arrives and with every line becoming longer it seems that not all is yet lost indeed. The poem ends with a question "Can we restore our long lost might?" to which no answer is given which is exactly the case in life. We can only hope, ask the fate will we succeed, and never abandon this question because it leads us in life and doesn't allow us to become totally desperate. Somehow I sense a positive resolution for that lost empire ;)
It is always hard when a loved one leaves. It hurts to say goodbye and you succeeded in expressing this feeling in your poem in a way that the reader can empathize with the speaker and feel in his place.
The structure of the poem is even, rhyme scheme and metre are well done. The poem has a good rhythm and is easy to read. The ever-repeating refrain makes a feeling of despair of the speaker even stronger. He cannot bear the thought of her to leave.
Your words touched my soul and for this you deserve the highest rating possible. I can totally relate to every word, because the genre is close to me and it is pretty much the theme of my own writings.
You are so right asking this rhetorical question "Is that love?". Sometimes it is just so hurtful that you ask yourself "Is this really what love is about?" "Isn't love all about roses, chocolates, butterflies in the stomach etc?". It isn't always. It can be painful, and at times unrequited too, but this is also a feeling that is important to experience in life.
