"Sonnet For My Husband" (…with only small apologies!)
The “Big Event” is almost here, my dear
With black balloons and “old man” jokes galore.
It’s time to celebrate that "five-oh" year!
Who knows what all your friends will have in store.
They’ll bring you canes and dentures and Depends
And they’ll poke fun at your senility.
They’ll seem more like your enemies than friends
You’ll wish they’d go away and let you be.
It’s fun to tease someone who’s getting “old”.
You’re past your prime! From here it’s all down hill!
Your hair falls out! Your gums will start to mold!
You’d better finish writing out your will!
…Perhaps I should be careful what I do…
A few more years and I’ll be fifty, too!
(I wrote this for my husband last year for his 50th birthday. It's a good thing he has a sense of humor!!)
Shakespearean style sonnet - Pattern: abab cdcd efef gg – 10 syllables per line
