          PIGEONS SNOWBALL FIGHT

          By: Rusty Cason

I went to the zoo with my very best friend.
We sat on a bench in the snow.

The zoo was a magical place to me.
That is why I would frequently go.

The end of the day and the park was closed,
with the sun setting over the trees.

Animals came to the foot of my bench
and started to do as they pleased.

My friend and I sat there and watched in surprise,
as they all started rolling up balls.

They rolled them together, stacked them up high,
          and slowly created a wall.

"What in the world am I seeing?" I asked
          "Where will this craziness go?"

          Animals don't work together,
and they don't roll up balls out of snow.

Then down came a small flock of pigeons,
just twenty or more feet away.

Rolling those balls, they built them a wall
and stacked them the very same way.

          We watched in constant amazement,
as they rolled up those balls made of snow.

Pile after pile, they stacked them up high,
at least three hundred or so.

Then came the part that bothers me most.
I felt it the instant it hit.

A snowball had popped me upside of my head,
And that's when I threw me a fit.

I looked in the eyes of my buddy,
He pointed back up to the wall.

The pigeons were standing there row after row,
each of them holding a ball.

The animals lined up in front of my bench.
The pigeons stood up on the hill.

Then came the "whoops" from both of the teams.
They started to throw them at will!

A flurry of snowballs filled the air.
The animals let out a moan.

          Rabbits were taking a pounding,
the squirrels were holding their own.

I reached down to grab me some ammo.
          Those pigeons outnumbered us all.

I launched off the balls with a vengeance,
          slowly they started to fall.

They bounced in the snow as I popped them.
         Feathers came down everywhere.

Just when I thought we had only begun,
a white flag flew up in the air.

I looked up the hillside to watch them.
They seemed to be rolling one more.

They heaved as they all worked together.
I wondered what they had in store?

The ball that they rolled was enormous!
Those birds worked together like bees.

They gave it a push to start it downhill.
I noticed it coming at ME!

My friend helped me get on my feet again.
He said that I tripped on my shoes.

You busted your head on the seat of the bench.
You've have been out for a minute or two.

While my face and my clothes were still soaking.
I'm sure what he told me was right.

Saying to him in the greatest dismay,
I must have imagined the fight.

My friend and I got up and walked away,
but a snowball came down from the hill.

It pounded my buddy right square in the nose.
I remember that look on him still.

We looked up the hill where the ball came from.
Nothing was up there but birds.

They fluttered and shuffled and all flew away.
My laughter was all that they heard!
