Love hurts... more than you know.
"So what do you think Mel? Isn't it wonderful?" says Jackie while holding up a drawing.
"Yeah great." Melanie says not even looking at the drawing. Her eyes are fixed on the guy running around the baseball diamond in front of them. Jackie looks at Melanie and waves her hand in front of her face. Mel comes to, blinks a few times then looks at Jackie.
"What were you saying?"
Jackie laughs, "Come on Mel you've been drooling over Jeff all year, why don't you just go and ask him out? School is almost over. I mean seriously what do you have to loose?"
"I'm not a complete moron Jackie. He'll say no and I don't think I'm ready for rejection."
"Fine then I'll just go and ask him out for you." Jackie stands up and starts toward the ball diamond.
Melanie gets a look of terror on her face. "Jackie come back here. I mean it if you do it I'll-." She stops yelling and instead pretends like she doesn't know what is going on. She grabs Jackie's pad and starts drawing.
Jackie walks up to Jeff who has just finished running around the bases. "Hello, Jeffery."
"Well look who it is. My favourite science partener Jackie Reid. So how have you been Jackie? Haven't seen you since last semester."
"Oh let's not make this about me now. Shall we?" She points to the bleecher next to her. They sit down. "Listen. I'm not sure if you know this but my friend Mel over there has this really big crush on you and she wants to know if you'll go out with her."
"Why doesn't she come ask me herself?"
Jackie chuckles a bit, " In case you haven't noticed she's a bit... well shy. Why don't you go over there and talk to her?"
Jeff stares at her for a bit, "Fine that's what I'll do." He stands up and walks in Mels direction. He sits down on the grass right beside her. "Hey Mel. So Jackie tells me you like me."
"I didn't want her to go over there I swear it's not like I planned it or anything.
"I know that. Jackie can be a little well... strong minded. So hey do you want to go to the movies tonight?"
Mel smiles, "Yeah that'd be great."

Ever since that date Mel and Jeff became inseperable. They did everything together. They had been together for two years, then in grade 12 Mel's dad got a job opening two and a half hours away. Jeff couldn't handle the long distance relationship so he broke it off with her. She was heart broken. It was bad timing too. They broke up two days after her dog died. She didn't date anyone anymore than a day after that.
After she graduated high school she became a grief counselor at her old high school. The one where she met Jeff. That brought back memories she thought she had put away. The memories came flooding back. She tried to drown them with alcohol. Nothing seemed to work. It pained her to think about it. She even had thoughts of killing herself like maybe, just maybe that would make it better. She would come to work drunk, the principle said he can't have any of it so he fired her. She drove around for an hour an a half and ended up at Bernie's Bar in Franchestor. She walked into the nearly empty bar, sat down and ordered every type of alcohol under the moon.
When she finially looked up she saw Jeff. The man who ruined her life. She decided to play it cool. They talked for a bit. He showed her his kids pictures. Married with kids... She couldn't take it. There, on the counter, a few feet away was a cork screw. She picked it up casually fitting it into the conversation trying to make it look like she fidgeted with things when she talked often. She fixed it between her fingers, then lifted her but away from the chair a bit then plunged it into his neck. She pulled it out slowly. He put his hand over the wound but the bleeding wouldn't stop. He fell to the ground. She stood up and started to walk toward the door. Jeff came up from behind the bar with a shot gun in his hands. He pulled the trigger shooting Mel in the back of the head. She fell to the ground dead.
