Some thoughts on Britain's year of floods
The Floods of 2007

They wouldn’t listen, they knew best
They would have their way
And so they built, didn’t even care
That soon they’d rue the day.

Fields torn up, roads put down
Tons of concrete laid
Houses built, more and more,
There’s money to be made.

And people bought, soon moved in
They had their new dream home
To make things worse, they paved their lawns
Not thinking what would come.

Green meadows went, gardens too
Covered o’er with concrete
New estates, roads, paths and drives
The rape of land complete

Views were wanted, rural scenes
An escape from city strife
So they went ahead, no thought, no care,
What would come into their life.

The years went by, the climate changed,
The rain fell more and more,
The rivers filled, still came the rains
‘Til the waters broke the shore.

The water poured, all across the land,
Land once called ‘flood plains’
On and out it spread, as the rain still poured
Meadows once again reclaimed.

Into house it crept, into business too
Spreading fingers far and wide
Destroying property, and wrecking lives
And then the people cried.

Horror came into this peaceful scene
As the floods grew deeper still,
Act of God, or greedy man?
Or just plain nature’s will?
