"Lie" is a story about a sleep-over gone wrong... |
Lisa, Claire, Jamie, and Alice were all having a slumber party at Claire's house. They were all 16 years old, and only Lisa had her driver's license. "Claire, what are we going to eat for dinner?" Lisa asked as she painted her toenails. "I don't know. Is everyone good with ordering pizza?" Claire replied with a question. A chorus of "yeah's" sprang up. Claire picked up her cell phone and scrolled through the address in her phone. "Pizza Hut or Papa John's?" she asked the girls. "Pizza Hut!" they all replied in unison. Claire rolled her eyes as she scrolled down to Pizza Hut's number and called. She ordered one extra-large, double pepperoni pizza. Thirty minutes passed and the doorbell rang. Claire answered the door to find a boy, who looked seventeen, standing there with the girls's pizza in his hands. She dug in her pocket, pulled out ten dollars, and handed it to the boy. "Thank you," Claire said to the delivery boy. "Very welcome, ma'am," he replied. "Could I use your restroom?" She didn't know how to respond. "Umm, no, I don't think so. We've got faulty pipes and we're waiting for a plumber," Claire lied. "Oh, okay," he said, beginning to walk away. She shut the door and locked it. "Gullible, gullible guy," she mumbled to herself as she walked into the kitchen where the girls were. "Food!" Jamie exclaimed, seeing Claire walk in with a huge pizza in her hands. The pizza was demolished within ten minutes. The next fifteen minutes were full of conversation and drinking soda. Alice ran quickly upstairs to the bathroom. She ripped a note from the mirror and rushed downstairs. She pulled Claire outside of the kitchen and shoved the note into her hands. "WHAT did you say to that pizza delivery guy?" Claire read the note in her mind. It said: Faulty pipes my ass! - Deliverer Her jaw fell open. Claire ran upstairs to lock all the windows and check all the rooms. All that she found was a broken window in the bathroom. Nothing else was touched. She ran back downstairs and closed all the blinds, locked the windows, and shoved the curtains togther. Walking into the kitchen, she announced, "Girls, we have a problem." She stuck the note on the counter for everyone to read. Jamie finished reading first. "How did he get in?!" she asked, slightly frightened. He broke the window upstairs," Claire explained. "Well, shit! Is he in here?" Alice questioned, looking around frantically. Claire answered with a stutter, "I-I-I... don't know..." All the girls looked at Claire. "I'm sorry! All I know is he broke the window, came in, and wrote the note," she answered, a bit angry with herself. "Oh! Don't forget he used the bathroom. He must have had to go," Lisa replied, trying to lighten the mood. She winked at Claire when she glared at her. After a few seconds of silence, Jamie asked, "What are we going to do?" "Maybe we should leave in my car," Lisa suggested. All the girls glared at her. "You drove here?" Claire asked. Lisa rolled her eyes and said, "Of course not! But my house is only two blocks away. We can walk that far... can't we?" The girls began looking at each other, worried. A couple "no's" and then "maybe's" slipped out from their mouths. Lisa looked at the girls with anticipation. "Well, are we going to leave in my car, or not?" Claire shook her head, followed by Jamie and Alice. "I think it's way too risky," Jamie stated. Alice nodded in agreement. "Well, I'm leaving in my car," Lisa told them. She stood up and began to head towards the door. Claire grabbed her shirt. "No." "Why not?" Lisa inquired. "It's my car; my choice." Claire stood her ground. "No. I'm not letting you go." "I'm leaving," Lisa said firmly. She walked over to the door, unlocked it, and walked out. Claire re-locked the door and watched Lisa walk away through the peep hole. She saw Lisa fall onto her side just before she turned the corner, fifty feet away. Just a couple seconds after Lisa fell, a piece of paper was shoved through the side of the door. Claire picked it up and read it. Hide was all it said. She ran into the kitchen, which was now being paced through by two worried girls. "Jamie, Alice! Lisa.. left, and is"-she practically choked on her words-"dead." She threw the piece of paper down on the counter. Alice looked down, and then up. "YOU LET HER LEAVE?!" she yelled at Claire. Claire replied furiously, "I couldn't stop her! I tried!" Tears welled up in her eyes. "What are we going to do?" Jamie asked. Claire looked at her, a tear streaking her cheek, "Do what the note says." All three girls ran upstairs, led by Claire, to a huge walk-in closet. The doors on it could be locked, and once everyone was inside, that is exactly what they did. "Call 911!" Alice told Claire. Claire, shaking, nodded her head. She quickly dialed, and when a woman answered, she said, "The pizza delivery guy is trying to murder me and my friends!" "And how do you know he is trying to murder you?" the 911 operator asked. "I watched him shoot my friend from the peep hole in my door! I live at 234 Scrawl Lane! Please come and help!" "How are you sure this is the person who delivered your pizza?" "Because he asked if he could use my restroom, I said no, that we had faulty pipes, which wasn't true, but he broke in to the upstairs of my house, and wrote a note and signed it 'deliverer'!" "Is upstairs where your restroom is?" "Yes!" Claire exclaimed, tired of the operator's questions. "Are you sending the police and an ambulance or not?" After a few seconds of silence, the operator said, with a reluctant voice, "Yes, I am. They will be there as soon as possible." "Thank you!" "Good-bye," the operator replied without warning. "Bye? What?!" The phone's dial tone came back. Claire looked at her phone, disgusted and said, "She. Hung. Up." "What?!" Alice exclaimed. "Nine-one-one operators DON'T hang up." Jamie heard footsteps on the stairs and a faint voice say, "Come out; come out, wherever you are!" She put a hand over each of the girls' mouth and shut her own. All the girls listened to the next sounds. Footsteps, a door squeaking as it opened, and someone coming closer to the closet door. Tears rolled down Claire's face. Jamie saw two feet come right in front of the closet door, and then walk away. She heard fading footsteps and the closing of a door. "He left," she whispered to the other girls. As she unlocked the door, a voice said, "No, he didn't!" The delivery boy grabbed Jamie by the neck of her shirt. Claire and Alice heard her scream, and a gun shot. The delivery boy walked into the closet and turned on the light. "Who's next?" the boy asked. "No, no, no!" Alice screamed. "Leave us alone!" Claire stood up and said, "The police are going to be here to arrest you any second now!" He smiled an evil smile and replied, "They won't find me." Alice got up and tried to run past him, but he caught her by her neck Claire got up and ran. She ran right past Alice and the pizza delivery man, shouting, "I'm sorry, Alice!" as she bolted down the steps. The police had just arrived, and Claire threw herself into one of the policemen, crying. "He's upstairs in my room killing my friend, Alice! You have to help her!" she exclaimed through her tears. The police ran into the house, following Claire with their guns ready, and found Jamie and Alice lying on the floor. Both dead, in puddles of blood. The window in the room was broken. There was a note laying on the floor that said, "At least I spared YOU." Claire's mother had been gone on a business trip while all this took place. When she received the call that murders had taken place in her home, she came back to her town and went down to the police station to take Claire back to their house. Upon arrival, the house was burned down to the cement foundation. Claire searched the ashes and blackened wood for any remaining belongings, to find yet another note. She picked it up, and read it out loud, "Think twice before you lie." |
