Once, late at night, as I lay in my bed,
a voice I heard speak, a voice of one dead.
He said in soft tone, “I mean you no harm.
I shall to you give no cause for alarm."
Upon hearing this, I could not believe,
that this was the voice that my mind perceived.
Though eerie at first, much comfort I drew,
from hearing this voice, a voice that I knew.
The voice that I heard was that of a friend
whose life at thirteen had come to an end.
He said, “My dear friend, I know how you’ve wept.
Alone in your heart, our friendship you’ve kept.
But take comfort now, for I tell you true,
that I am neither dead nor far from you."
