A poem for my flat. My take on the different types of love.
Valentine’s Day Poem
What V day is really all about

Flowers and cards and pancakes and cream,
Strawberries, wine with a chocolaty dream.
The mask of the day has barely a seam,
Yet shedding it still, what’s left to be seen?

The excitement of games between hunters and prey,
All of us sought after, by whom who could say?
Tiptoe around and give nothing away,
Or put your cards on the table and risk dismay?

Or is it about the eros* of lovers?
Young bodies as one underneath the covers.
Sounds of hushed moaning unknown to all others,
Then that short, blissful sleep whilst each recovers.

What of love between friends, both steady and fast?
Forged by one little prank or a lifetime of past.
Can you capture that moment when you knew it would last?
They’ve always got your back when the dice have been cast.

Willing to go down; with you their ship,
Lose everything together and it matters not one bit.
That glance and that nod as you both say “Fuck it”
No matter how many cross you they’ll never split.

As for true love, I’ve nothing to say.
Maybe I’ll revise this at a later day.
But until then I ask you to fill in this blank,
Happy Valentine’s Day friends now I’m off for a shower!

*Eros or Ἔρως is the ancient Greek for “erotic love”
