A poem for my mama
My mama
Dear momma I’ve waited all my life to meet you.
Waited to feel your warm embrace on my tiny little body
Kiss and make up for lost time
Catch up on how we telepathically knew that
one day we will meet
I still reminisce and recognise scent of your sweet smell

Each year I celebrated mother’s day hoping for the
best gift…..my mama
I would play all the mama songs especially R.Kelly’s Sadie
With flashing images of us together walking to church,
Where you taught me how to draw my strength

Visualising how I will sing with my mellowed voice.
After church we’ll be paging through my photo albums,
sharing my growing pains memories with you
I have patiently waited for this special day that
I can also show off my mama to everyone

Being without each other for this long, but
to me you will always remain my mama.
The one who could have tucked me in bed and read
bedtime stories for her sweet little girl
Making me the princess that I‘ve always been in your heart
While blossoming and battling with my identity I knew that my mama
will always be my queen

When I bought my first pack of sanitary towels ,your spirit was
reigning in my soul
When I had my first boyfriend in my teens, you were
far ,but I knew you approved.
I noticed that I have daddy’s lips, but
when I smeared my first lipstick I just saw you in me
Having my fair share of adolescence you were the one
instilling confidence in my soul
My assertiveness is a shoot of a branch with roots planted in you
I love you mama

When you carried me in your tummy, you equipped
me with all the nature lessons you wanted me to learn.
The strong bond that connects us continued to build me
into the strong woman you’ve always wished for .
Your good taste in clothes has worn off on me.
The natural chef in you is taking it’s pride in
me.
Thank you mama.
You have taught me well.

Today you will be so proud of your princess
She has kissed a lot of frogs, but knows
that soon her handsome prince shall arrive
To complete her fairytale story to reality
I’ll always be your sweet little girl mama.
