A night of skating changes our view of the fairer sex.

One of the guys I grew up with had a crush on one girl from Junior High on, Cynthia.  The rest of us weren't really comfortable around girls yet.  Oh we talked a good game, but reality...

We alternated between making fun of lover boy, and being envious of him.

Winter has finally arrived around here this year.  Ice is starting to form on the ponds, reminding me of our last year in Junior High.

Our town sponsored a public skating area.  Lights for night skating, a warming cabin with a rock fireplace, and a snack bar.  The number of skaters depended on how cold and windy it was.

On the night of our story, the ice was in good shape, the weather relatively mild.  Most of the kids in town were there.  Even some old folks, in their twenties and thirties.

Most of the boys our age played at hockey.  The organized youth game hadn't come to town, so while we could occasionally get a shot off, the sticks we carried were as much for keeping us on our skates.

Our buddy showed up with Cynthia.  No hockey for him.  They actually held hands going around the ice.

We thought that "You guys holding each other up?" was an hilarious question.

Cynthia rolled her eyes, and giving one of those girly smirks with a shake of her head, she put on a little show for us losers.  Skating backwards, spinning, and gliding with one leg extended.  When she raised her arms she looked like a harbinger of Spring, a butterfly on the ice.

Later, in the cabin enjoying their hot chocolate, the two of them looked good together.  For the rest of the gang, that night likely marked a changing outlook on those previously strange creatures called girls.
