Wind Bre watched as Mistress Wind came across the tree tops. They bent and swayed in protest, their trunks creaking loudly under her onslaught. She was a cruel mistress, eating everything in sight....everything until it was all gone and there was nothing left for her to eat. She came from far away and moved swiftly and dangerously closer. Bre stood her ground. There was no hiding, no running from Wind. She would catch you sooner or later. If Bre could give her a color, it would be a dirty grey, or perhaps, an evil, inky black. But Wind would own no color. She would only touch and her touch was biting with razor sharp teeth or claws that ripped and shredded or she could be fire and ice that burned and froze. Bre had only ever been singed by Wind’s touch. But today, today she knew Wind was coming for her. She hoped she could face her bravely. She didn’t want to show fear. She didn’t want to cry out for mercy. She didn’t want to pule and whine. She wanted to face Wind head on and laugh as Wind tore her apart. She wanted to die with dignity. As Wind moved closer, Bre gave voice to the thoughts running through her mind. “Damn, I know this is gonna hurt.” she murmured. “This ain’t gonna be easy.” Wind roared as she moved closer, almost as if Bre’s bravery angered her in some unspeakable way. Bre stared her down. Let Wind give her best....let her roar and bitch. Bre watched as Wind stopped short then teasingly roared past her almost as if to say, “Not this time Bre....not today.” Bre sank to her knees and cried out in anger. “I’ve waited so long for you...come back and finish the job!” Wind kept moving further and further away. She’d let Bre suffer a while longer. She’d taken all from Bre that the girl had to give. She’d taken her mother, her father, her home. There was nothing left that she wanted. Bre climbed to her feet and walked back to her car. She had to get out of this place. She had to finally break free from Wind’s deadly allure. Living in Tornado Ally, Wind always won. Bre turned and took one last look. Wind was miles away now and eating up everything in her path with her voracious appetite. |
