Back, Back, Way Back

“Jimmy, let her go,” said the fat old man, smoking next to the old Cadillac on the dirt road.

“What do you mean, ‘let her go,’ Boss?” asked Jimmy, mouth agape.

“What do you think it means, you dummy? Unite her hands and feet, let her walk away. Someone’ll pick her up eventually. And I know she won’t say what we look like. Will ya, darlin’?” Boss asked to the heiress, kneeling in the road. She shook her head. “Besides, even if she does, you know we have protection.”

“I know, Boss,” Jimmy said. “But why not keep her? You know they’ll pay sweet ransom.”

Boss shrugged, puffing indifferently. “Maybe. But you know that’s not our Family’s way. Never been our way, ever since I was your age.”

Jimmy threw his head back and laughed loudly. “Yeah yeah, I know it’s not our Family’s way. The way being, what, exactly? What you did way back when? Johnny, do you believe this guy?”

Johnny only ate his ham sandwich quietly on the hood of the car, trying to stay out of it.

Boss threw his cigar on the ground and stamped it out, moving toward Jimmy. “‘This guy?’ Jimmy, you’re re
ally testing my patience right now. Don’t make me-”

Jimmy pulled out his gun and fired in a second, yelling “And you tested my patience for years!” Boss fell back, arms splayed. Jimmy walked over and fired again. And again. He turned to Johnny and aimed the gun. “Johnny, help me.”

Johnny threw his sandwich in the dirt and scrambled to pick up Boss and throw him in the trunk, the heiress following him.

Jimmy chuckled, friendly but still aiming dead at Johnny. “You made a smart move, Johnny. Don’t worry. I promise you, we’re going to be rich.”
