Memories of my mum
THOUGHTS OF MY MOTHER

It’s twenty years since my mother died,
But she’s in my thoughts still,
I remember tough and tender love,
A woman with an iron will.

Now I understand her,
Now I realise,
Now I appreciate her ways,
Now I sympathise.

I’m sorry for the things I did,
Things that brought her pain,
If I could have my time again,
I wouldn’t be the same.

Now I find I’m saying,
Things my mother said,
Her words come back to haunt me,
Like a message from the dead.

Too late I’d like to thank her,
For knowing what was best,
For teaching me hard lessons,
My life was truly blessed.

She shaped me like a sculptor,
Taught me right from wrong,
She smoothed all my rough edges,
Soothed me with a song.

But I just took her for granted,
Thought she’d always be here,
Then the day came when she fell asleep,
A day of sorrow and tear.

That day I remember like yesterday,
When her lovely life came to an end,
I’m so thankful for the time we had,
Truly she was my best friend.
