Andrew had heard that a school of sharks was swimming toward the beach near his island home. However he didn't expect them for several days. So he donned his trunks and went out his back door to the beach. Placing his towel on the sand, he dove into the surf and swam out with a wave. With some assistance from the ocean current he soon found himself far off shore. It was then that he noticed it. A dorsal fin was slicing through the water! He knew there was no way he could out swim the shark. He considered his situation and decided that perhaps not moving at all would be the best course of action. So he relaxed and allowed the water to support him. It seemed to work as the shark turned away. Then suddenly it turned around and headed straight for him. Fear gripped him as he helplessly watched the approaching fin.

Suddenly movement several meters away caught his peripheral vision. Turning to see what other trouble was now besetting him he saw another dorsal fin in the water! Somehow it appeared different than the shark fin now circling him. The new fin suddenly rushed toward him. Andrew didn't know what he was going to do but he had no intention of becoming shark bait without a fight! Steeling himself for the fight of his life he prepared for battle. Then just as suddenly as it had come toward him the second fin changed course and moved toward the first fin. Andrew watched in amazement as the second fin, which he now realized was a dolphin, moved rapidly toward the shark. The dolphin then rammed the shark extremely hard. In fact it was so hard that Andrew felt himself taking pity on the shark. He knew however that the dolphin had just saves his life.

"Ram him again boy" Andrew shouted, not sure if the dolphin was a male or not and not really caring. "Ram it to him!"

The dolphin swam toward the shark again but the shark was now swimming rapidly away. It had decided to put lunch on hold for the time being. The dolphin broke off its attack and flipped in the air near Andrew. When it was back in the water it came to Andrew with its nose in the air. Andrew rubbed its head.

"Thank you" he told the dolphin. "You saved my life!"

As he made his way back to shore the dolphin stayed with him. He knew it was the beginning of a wonderful friendship!
