The dirtroad winds
through the fallow fields of fall,
which cast a dark shadow
across the soul
of the lone traveler
making his way toward
the covered bridge
that marks the half-way point
between the Mountains of the Dawn
and those of the Sunset.
He pauses,
removes a canteen
from his belt,
and sips
the last of the morning dew
collected at the beginning of his quest.
Glancing around
at the barren country
on either side of the road,
he contemplates
taking a moment to rest,
but an icy breeze
blowing down from the north
reminds him
that he must reach the old wooden bridge
before the year's first snow
and retrieve the gold dragon flag
before continuing toward the west.
