Autumn looks like death;
The rotting leaves
In blacks and browns
Scattered, hopeless, in the street.
Raven skies
Heavy with clouds
That shroud the evening sun
The flowers in the hedgerows
Fade out fast.
A lone poppy
Waves a bloody flag
Behind the wire fence.
In the garden
Vegetables are left to seed
As browning apples
Dissolve into the dirt,
And shrivelled grapes rot
Upon the vine.
The dead and dying
Fill my inbox every day.
The news plasters them about,
Absently,
Like used stamps
From postcards sent long ago.
Daylight saving is ending
But nobody was saved.
The stars in the night sky
Are all beside themselves.
The eons
They have witnessed,
Under their fading light
