“Mark, you have to stop taking that stuff. It’s going to kill you.”
“This isn’t a deadly drug, Fran, it’s a liberator.”
“A what?”
“I’ve discovered their secret.”
“Whose secret?”
“This world we live in isn’t real. It’s a program and I’ve discovered a way to get free of it.” He held up the syringe.
“Yeah, you’re going to be liberated all right. You’re going to be dead.”
“No, I’m not. I’m going to enter their world.”
“If you’re part of a program, how can you live outside of it?”
“You don’t understand. We’re not part of a program. We live in a program. When I enter their world. I’ll be free.”
“Ok, then what will you do?”
“I’ll figure a way to free all of you.”
“And you think they’re going to let you do that?”
“Maybe not, but I’m leaving my formula with you. It’s in a file labeled ‘Exit’. Those who want to free themselves can.”
“Enough. Put the syringe down, Mark.”
“Oh, this syringe isn’t for me. I’ve already injected mine. I’m just waiting for it to kick in. This one’s yours.”
She paled. Fear clawed its way through her. “You aren’t shooting me with that shit.”
“Wouldn’t dream of it. I’m leaving it for you in case you change your mind.” He secured it in a case and laid it on the counter. “Now –
Banging sounded from the lab door. “Fran, are you alright?”
“I see you brought backup. Well, time to leave. Goodbye for now, Fran.”
He slipped through the rear door and locked it behind him.

“There is no sign of him in the building,” said the chief. “We did find his clothes though. He must have had a change stashed away somewhere.”
“Yeah,” Fran said frowning, “must have.”
