Empathy is superficially about others. Could it actually be about ourselves? Interesting.

Ki – Empathy

************************

I have always been conflicted by the concept of empathy.

It would seem that many think it to be some kind of talent, or perhaps
some existential ‘gift’. They consider themselves an ‘adept’ and
that they can ‘see’ into the soul of another person.

I find that troubling.

That does not suggest that there may be no abilities and insights that
can help us explore and understand another human being, only that
the comprehension and ability to discover complex truths can be
intensely complicated and difficult to interpret and translate.
We need to tread lightly since our investigations are intimately involved
with our own existence, and the ramifications of what we believe we expose
can result in life-changing consequences,
both for ourselves and the target of our concern.

Empathy is not an affair of the heart but of the mind.

It is never what you would like it to be, but what it is,
and that is an intimate view into the mind and soul of another.
It is a glimpse into the depths of a reality not of your own making,
and possibly outside of your own experience.
It may well be alien, and it will often make no sense whatsoever.
To even attempt the comprehension of another it will be necessary
to completely detach yourself from your own reality.

To see what they see, but not with your own eyes,
but the sight and wonder and disbelief from a different perspective.
To hear what they hear, not with your own ears, but the ears of someone
to whom pleasure and pain may be very different than your own.
To think thoughts that are not your own, and full of expectations
and fear of the known and the unknown.

To feel what they feel in their heart of hearts, without the knowledge
to ever really know the reasons why they interpret life the way they do.
Their experiences are not those you have encountered, and their challenges are
something that you have never had to endure or feel in your own life.
The opportunity to gaze into their very souls.

What you see could well be truth, and what you experience, empathy.

Experience life through the eyes of another
There exists a reality other than your own

everyone

' Remember .....
everyone is fighting their own battle
confronting their own demons
taking another step, upon their own path

Empathy ..... will bring you peace '

dreamer

I am only a dreamer
This is my dream

To live my life as I see fit
the freedom to live and learn, to love and grow
without coercion, without restriction

Never to hurt another with hate or violence
expecting nothing more or less in return
to offer help, when I am able
to accept the same, when there is need
to take the time and see the good in all
to make an effort to reject the bad wherever it appears
to embrace life with all of its challenges
and acknowledge that we all carry our own burdens
and suffer our own demons

A life of love and compassion, empathy and understanding
the right to follow my own path, and create my own destiny
and for all others, the freedom to do the same

I am only a dreamer, and that is my dream

been

Sometime . . . .
think of all those who never were
but easily could have been
their flame carelessly blown out
like a candle in a soft wind

a life tragically wasted
a soul mindlessly denied
another one irreparably damaged
. . . . forever

the shooters

we think we know them, but we do not
to know them is to be them, and to be them is death

we are the choices that we ultimately make
and it will be no different for those we term the shooters
their thoughts are tortured and malevolent
their actions are monstrous and inexplicable
the agony is excruciating and intolerable
pain begets nothing but pain

they are our shooters, and we created them
through neglect, and fear, and ignorance and hatred
of them, of others, of life, of self

we did not kill but damaged their souls
we did not shoot but damaged their hearts
we did not constrain their bodies but imprisoned their minds
and the end result was, well, to be expected

there is no turning back, no time for regrets
it is now and they are here, there will be no retreat
they are all someone's child, they are our children
children killing children, we have taught them well

they are us

the inevitable begins

different

i always knew that i was different
realization came early
an outsider in a group of outsiders
i have worn many labels
some true
many not so true
most created in ignorance
an old soul i have forever been
i embrace the label
wearing it with Honor
living it with integrity
experiencing peace
knowing self
dying with contentment
until it begins anew
