Inspiration





Like so many concepts that we are forced to confront daily, the
meaning of inspiration has been a source of consternation of
many when we understand that the dichotomy of the word
creates an awe of the unknown in its original context,
and has degenerated into something
much more mundane with the passage of time.

It is said that we ‘search’ for inspiration but is that what really
happens? Or is it more a case of inspiration ‘finding’ us? Is it
a matter of focus and motivation or simply our imagination
running wild or a flight of fancy? Whatever it may be,
it gives us the opportunity to think about issues and concepts
and art that might never have come to our attention otherwise.
It allows us to grow and develop and to push the accepted limits
to a level that only moments before were thought unimaginable.

Do we understand the origins of the word as we look back to
the beginnings of our species and the beliefs in the divine
and the supernatural, or do we continue to contemplate
the unknown workings of our inner selves?
At one time inspiration was exclusively an aspect of some
spiritual influence that brought new insights into our thoughts,
our words and our actions that transcended the norms
of ordinary human abilities.

What is inspiration in philosophy?
It is creation, insight and revelation all wrapped up into a
single experience. Inspiration comes to us by way of the Greek
‘inspiratus’ which translates into ‘breathe’ and indeed,
with each breath, there is an opportunity to change our
own reality, and the reality of those around us.

Inspiration can take an individual from apathy to optimism, it can
offer clarity, self-awareness and a myriad of new
possibilities. It can be a source of motivation and vision
for the future. It can change your life.

It can be elusive, but it exists in all of us,
And we only need look for it
