A family is separated by death, mutation and monstrous civil war. Literal monsters.
scientific older gentleman creates a state-of-the-art modern library in a rural area. Before the grand opening the gentleman mysteriously disappears with no clues. The “library” then is never opened, but rather is turned into a memorial of the “gentleman scientist”.
Years later the son of the “gentleman scientist” (who is not aware of who his farther actually is) and his young family (wife and 2 children son and daughter-Max and Zoe) move into the same quiet town where the library stands.
A few years later the “city” contacts “dad” to advise he is the eldest child of the “gentleman scientist” and they require his signature to transfer the “library” to city ownership and to turn the building into a museum. Before signing, Dad decides he wants to explore the library and takes his wife to review the property.
On their way to the property, it is determined that the two parents pass away in a car accident leaving the two kids orphans. Thankfully the older sister of “dad” (on his mom’s side) also lives in the town and takes in the children. Causing stress and trauma to the poor children, the “sister” lives even closer to the “library” a reminder of where the parents were headed when they passed away. Both children spend time gazing at the building which is in view of their current rooms in “sister’s” home.
The children see a strange rabbit-like creature flying around the top of the building late at night and enter through the basement window. Curious, the two kids decide one night to follow the creature into the building. It is here they do not encounter the Rabbit but rather exploring the room they are started by a shape shifting gigantic monster. Both kids startled and scared make a lot of noise trying to escape the creature. Both turn and run so quickly in the dark, they run right into a wall and knock themselves out.
This Library this modern marvel, is a cover. It is a science lab where “gentleman scientist” was trying to organically create beings of virtue. As contradictory as he is, Gentleman scientist was a religious biologist who believed he could create beings to do the work of God on earth. His peers both science and religious advised him against this as it is blasphemous and immoral, but he continued.
The government offered funding, however once he had been deemed successful with a few creatures, the government now wanted to convert these creatures into bioweapons. As these beings happen to display an array of skills aside from their proclivity to protecting the “ten commandments”.
The last two of these creatures had been strictly created by the government using scientists’ technology. Except instead of using human DNA mixed with animals, they used actual humans and injected them with the animal DNA. What the government didn’t not know, was the scientist also had cracked a doorway into another dimension, and the DNA he was using was organic matter he came across in these other dimensions. Especially being the reason, he didn’t want to do human trials. During these tests on these two humans, the new abilities acquired during the testing allowed the two new creations to destroy the room and kill all individuals present. Of course, prior to the destruction, the gentleman scientist did not die in the explosion.
It is without question the parents of our two kids that are the last humans the government tested on.
The government wanted the gentleman scientist to turn over his facility completely to them. To provide them with all his findings as they knew he was hiding some. And as he didn’t want to do either, the government sought out his eldest and only son to use as leverage. As a bonus, the son’s wife was with him when they were kidnapped. The government, however, did not know that either the son or the gentleman scientist had any idea of their relation. The gentleman scientist apologizes to “son” as a person and for sacrificing him to the government, but he can not allow the government to have access to his files. And so, the government proceeded with their experiment.
As a result, Son and wife were transformed and turned into two unbelievable powers and destroy the room and all humans in it.
Over time the couple explore the library and find that it was really a holding ground, more like a zoo for the creatures that the gentleman scientist had previously created. Each room of the “library” catered to a particular creature’s needs and their abilities. Dad and “mom” take in these creatures as their children feeling a longing and pain missing their own.
Through this pain “mom” and “dad” eventually grow to odds. As mom hurt to be involved in an experiment, she had nothing to do with that took her away from her children, grows cold, angry, vicious, and dangerous. Dad feeling guilt for bringing mom into the situation, confusion not knowing his own father and love from their new children does agree with mom but believes in a peaceful way to live moving forward. This wedge of ideals (much like professor x and magneto) separates couples and in turn creates two separate support systems among the creatures living in the facility. Lead by “mom” Those in support of strength, freedom destruction and power. Lead by “dad” Those who want to exist in peace, have no interest in the outside world and want to enjoy their lives as is.
As a fail safe the facility completely shut down during the destruction allowing 0 entry points throughout the building, except one window in the basement. It is agreed upon between mom and dad that only one creature was able to venture into the natural world to report on life in the outside world, obtain resources and anything else the house may need. This being the “white rabbit”. The white rabbit supports “mom” but as Dad has assumed the basement as his domain, nothing gets in or out without dad knowing. Mom assumed the attic as her domain where she herself could observe the outside world. This further created resentment for her as she could see the world, humans exist normally. Her desire to return to her former life festers her anger and fuels her rage. It is in a moment of gazing outside she sees her kids and sister-in-law. Not realizing herself exactly where they had been, she now wanted to get a message from her kids that she was alright. This is when the kids get a glimpse of the rabbit and its subtle request to follow. Mom assumes if dad just sees the kids, he will melt and want to support her desire to return to the outside world. When the kids do catch a glimpse of their dad in his new form (not knowing that he is their father) they both run away terrified and end up running right into a wall, knocking them both out.
Dad, feeling ashamed tells butler penguin that he needs to get the kids out of the building. He needs to do so quietly and without “mom” knowing. This becomes a challenge as the basement window is the only known entry point. There is one creature in the property that is a rouge and has aligned himself with neither dad nor mom. The very 1st creature created. Share no allegiance and primarily desires to be left alone (Kangaroo Jack). His room is on the top floor of the facility just under Mom’s. under his however are levels of rooms all supporters of “mom”. The divide of support is physical as well. Meaning all of “dad’s” supporters are on the lower levels of the building while the top levels are “mom” supporters.
Dad and Penguin butler take the kids up to the main floor and area. Dad returns to the basement so as not to be seen by the kids, and Penguin Butler is then left to explain to the kids what this building is, what the creatures are and that he is going to help them get out. The kids (after the initial shock of seeing a Frankenstein looking penguin butler) are not able to digest what is happening. They have seen the strange rabbit, and now the giant basement monster. They feel the sincerity of penguin butler and agree to let him help them get out. He does explain that there is a civil war within the facility and that they must be careful navigating it. Although the creatures have their “rooms” they all do have freedom to move about the facility as they please. Occasionally there will be a disagreement between the two factions, but nothing that becomes too intense. However, now with “humans” in the building, they represent true freedom. The real ability to exit. Some would want to go with them. Some would want to keep them to give to mother. Other’s (not so faithful) may want to eat the children to try and absorb their humanity (as these creatures unlike mom and dad were never human. Just animals with some human DNA). The navigation through the facility will have to be very thought-out.
As Penguin butler himself rarely leaves the first floor he decides to enlist the help of another creature that is more in tune with the energy and flow of each individual creature, and it’s needs/wants. This creature also knows a secret dumb waiter elevator that will take them to kangaroo jacks’ room directly.
It is important to note that each “room” for these creatures is specifically tailored to that creature. Much like Grunwald fabulous beasts.
During the kid’s adventure to get to Kangaroo Jack’s room, they do venture into a few different creature’s habitats. One walks into disobeying penguin butler. Another the creature pulls them into. And several different twists and turns land them in a few rooms unexpectedly. Through the confusion and misdirection, Penguin butler realizes that the creature he requested help from truly had no idea of how to get to the dumb waiter. He had been alone and just wanted to be useful.
The four of them then go to seek the “book worm” who holds the knowledge of all things knowable within the building. It had digested information from books, papers and actual brain matter that had been left by the government agents during the “explosion” the book worm knows all but was not enticed to share anything with anyone else because it feared the outside world would not accept them and would in fact continue to experiment on them. He shares this information with the kids and penguin butler as the kids seemed not to find him repulsive but rather in need of love also.
It is through his information that the back story of what happened to “dad” and “mom” is shared. Also, why the house is divided and the true desires of each parent. The kids still don’t know that “mom” and “dad” are THEIR “mom” and “DAD”. The book worm does know where the dumb waiter is and guides them to it.
Being that the dumb waiter is on “moms” turf and now “mom” fully aware of what is happening in the building as told by to her by the white rabbit, mom sends two other creatures to get the kids. These creatures powerful and cunning, but also two that would rather do their own thing than follow mom’s direction do grab the kids Killing both Book worm and penguin butler in the process. They take the kids to their own space with the intention of eating them and absorbing their humanity. As they decide to take their time and make this a ritual, a feature of penguin butler being a “Frankenstein” like creation, detaches its head and brain which makes its way down to “dad” and tells him what is going on.
Dad (who never leaves the basement) then travels to this floor to confront the creatures. Completely obliterating these creatures and saving the kids dad continues to be ashamed of his presence. It is also at this time that we see that “dad” cannot communicate through speech. He has no tongue in this monster form. His eyes and body language convey his sincerity to the children. With the story they heard from book worm, and the actions of dad, they decide to stay with him. The kids remember what floor the dumb waiter was on and can see that they had been taken back down two floors and now must make their way up again.
On the way up again, Dad recruits a few supporting creatures from his side knowing that mom is probably aware at this point of what his plan is (to get the kids to Kangaroo Jack and out of the building) and anticipates she will send more supporters. After getting a few more creatures on his side, this is exactly the case and a group of supporters of mom stand between the dumbwaiter and dad, his supporters, and the kids. Neither side of these creatures truly want to hurt each other, however their ideals, their goals and desires directly conflict with each other and so they must fight to the death. There is no option.
Through the mess and chaos dad can get the kids into the dumbwaiter and is left behind to continue fighting to protect them. Before the kids close the dumbwaiter Dad “boops” the nose of daughter. Something he did to her all the time as a baby growing up to her teenage years now. She for a moment looks into his eyes and feels a connection. It is instantly ripped away as Dad is attacked and appears to have died while the kids escape in the dumbwaiter up to kangaroo Jack.
They get up to the room with Kangaroo jack and the doors open to what appears to be outside. A vast nothing resembling the Australian desert. The kids wander around for a while, this room feeling nothing like a room at all. For what feels like an entire day the kids are tired, hungry, and worn out. The Sunsets and they see a fire in the distance. It is Kangaroo jack sitting by the fire eating a can of beans. Shocked to see the kids but doesn’t seem to be disturbed at the sight of humans. He offers them food.
As the kids sit with him and notice he is completely a mixed mess of machinery and flesh he goes into the story of how he came to be. The initial trials of the “gentleman scientist”. He uses the phrase “make good choices” as something the gentleman scientist would often say to himself while working on kangaroo jack. The kids also realize this is something their father would say to them every morning. It is at this point the kids start to put together that their parents were not in a car accident but rather it was made to look that way. Their parents had been kidnapped and turned into creatures also. The deduce that if “dad” is mulgrim, then “mom” must be the yet to be seen “LITA”. When saying it Kangaroo jack shares what he knows about LITA. How ruthless and powerful she is. He in fact decided to have his room as close to her as he did because he feels he may be the only one to be able to keep her where she is. His ability is creating portals to different dimensions and to the outside world. He just prefers to be alone because humans have shown themselves to be cruel and destructive. He tells the kids that he can help them and create a portal to their home and set them free.
He tells the kids to rest up while they can in the desert night, and in the morning, he will take them home.
Kangaroo jack however betrays them and takes them right to LITA. As he mentioned, he hates humans. LITA does not really hate the humankind, does believe she is superior and once she has her children, her next goal is to leave the facility and take down conventional government. To allow all creatures to be free and left alone. Kangaroo jack agrees with this ideology and commits to being on LITA’s side. However as soon as he brings her children to her, she instantly kills him. Her children are human, and innocent. Kangaroo jack never threatened her children, hated all humans, and would eventually want to hurt someone’s children. Lita wanted peace. She wanted her family. The kids tell her that the other creatures she sent had ended up killing “DAD” mulgrim to save them. LITA then sees red. Although they disagreed on the path, they agreed on the outcome of peace and family love. Her love was gone, and she was now a single parent. This rage intensified and LITA no longer cared to restrain her abilities. LITA decides that it is her fault that her support has gone too far. She now believes that if there are opinions on life and how to live it there will always be opposing sides and life will always be lost. This in addition to knowing that if she gets out her supporters and non-supporters of these creatures were now steeped in blood. No longer innocent they have seen destruction and could vary well see it as permission to now attack the outside world. She decides the best thing to do from here is kill all the remaining creatures in the house including herself. Taking her kids with her through each level of the facility, LITA uses her immense ability to dispatch creature after creature like nothing. Former supporter or not, they all were sacrificed. She got down to the basement and not having seen Mulgrim’s body on any of the other floors, she finally stepped into the space he claimed. She does find a door that leads to a part of the basement not seen before. Behind this door is the room in which the scientist had conducted the experiments. She sees Mulgrim’s body lying on the floor with an arm stretched out to a wallet near him that contained pictures of their family all as humans. Altogether, Happy. LITA cries and whales. An awful sound. One heard many times in the facility with no discernible origin. This sound startled the kids many times throughout the facility as they walked through it, but now they know this is the pain from their mother. Her lose heard nightly as she remembered her family. LITA’s ability was to live in memories. She would visit her human family in memories nightly and this is truly her fuel for why she is so angry and hurt. Furthermore. She realizes she lost her love for her partner, because she couldn’t see how her desire overshadowed what could have been for just the two of them.
When she settles, she notices that the room itself had in fact been operational. Books open, computers making sounds. This room had been almost completely reconstructed.
It turns out being the son of “gentleman Scientist” “DAD” had a penchant for science as well. With the help of bookworm, he was rebuilding the experimental room. And in a diary found on a desk his writing indicates that he wanted nothing more than to return to his original form with LITA so they could go home to their kids. All the science was there, all the details were there.
LITA, in a state of not totally being sound of mind, returns to her original state of being greater than. Being powerful and instead of using science and technology to return herself into a human, she decides the best way for her to protect her children from the cruel work that exists is to grant them new abilities like she has. She decides to have them join her as creatures.
The children oddly enough do not disagree. With dad gone and the only person they truly felt close to being “MOM” they willingly decide to join her. And so, following Dad’s science LITA turns the kids.
During the process the kids of course scream and yell in transformational pain and in doing so their powers also become evident. Son now with the ability to manifest illusions and daughter with a very unique ability to amplify abilities. While the kids are in this moment LITA comes to the realization that this was not the right decision, and seeing her kids in pain she tries to release them. However, a barrier of electricity and pure energy keeps her away. She can only hear their screams and watch them writhe in pain. She then goes to Mulgrim’s body and holds him for one last time.
Daughter sees this out of the corner of her eye while still locked in this moment. Her ability seeps from her eyes and flows through her mother LITA. Lita’s ability is to either speed or reverse the age of anything she touches. In holding mulgrim and the amplification of her daughter’s power flowing through her the entire room is filled with electricity and energy. Finally, the kids’ bodies settle and are lifeless. Lita’s body settles and is smoking while lifeless. And on top of her legs as he was being held Mulgrim’s body remains lifeless………….and then…………his eyes open.

End of book one
