Everyday miracles
MIRACLES

If it's a question of miracles,
why then, I'd have to say
I walk in miracles,
am surrounded by miracles,
am overwhelmed by them :

Sunlight on a small child's hair,
or leafy patterns of shade beneath a tree,
or the gentle ripple of a stream,
or empty, moonwashed roads at night,
or the roar and splash of ocean against the shore,
or little birds that go their sudden, timid ways,
or the simple beauty of daisies in a field -
These are all miracles to me.

And then the other kind :
The quiet thrill of poetry that suddenly speaks to you,
or the excitement of new ideas,
or the pleasant warmth of unexpected kindnesses,
or the peace of knowing that you are loved,
or the enjoyment of easy laughter -
These too are miracles.

But the greatest miracle of all, to me,
is the overwhelming joy of a friend,
whose soul is so linked to mine,
that we can share each other's miracles.
For between us, there are not two lists of them,
but only one.
