Flash Fiction

Sunday Afternoon

Raking up the leaves under our tree. My husband insists that we should not mix the leaves with the grass, we should rake before we mow. Consequently, I usually mow while he’s at work (he can’t tell if it’s full of leaves or not…) Unfortunately, he’s home today, so I am raking…

Somehow, there was a long piece of string mixed up in the leaves that I didn’t know was from where. It must have blown in and the rake is not moving the leaves so well. (The lawn mower would have taken care of it in one swipe… )

Stopping long enough to untangle, I found that the string was actually tied to a leaf, and it was not a leaf from this tree. It was a larger puffy thing, nothing I ever saw before. Finally getting to where it was, I found out it was not a leaf at all! It apparently was some kind of balloon! Now so flat that it just looked like a large leaf.

I picked it off carefully, it did look like a large leaf, deflated… suddenly I wanted to inflate it and see what it really looked like! Not knowing who blew it up the first time, I went and got my air pump.

I got it all put together and started pumping, and the balloon started getting bigger and bigger. It seemed to have map like pictures on it as it got big enough to see them, I was fascinated! Unfortunately, as I pumped, I got so excited I pumped too much! Suddenly it exploded, spewing sticky rubber pieces all over the glass of our living room bay window, Which I now will have to wash…

New Plan: tomorrow I will mow the lawns while hubby is at work…
