Divine Life part 2

The two officers walked into the waiting room expecting to see a homeless man asleep on the couch. Instead they took a couple of steps and stopped as if they were blocked by a wall.
“Whew!“ exclaimed Officer Foster. “This room smells like someone died in here.”
Officer Cromwell quickly put her hand over her nose and turned her head. “My ex’s apartment didn’t even smell this bad after his electricity had been off for a week.
“Hey! Is anyone in here.?” He took in another breath to finish, “dead or alive?”
The bathroom door slowly opened and JoJo’s face appeared. He tried to slowly move backwards but it was too late.
“Don’t even think of going back in that bathroom until you tell us who you are and what you are doing here.”
“I found a baby.” He said as he started to shake.
“They call me JoJo. And I did not hurt her.” He held out his hand to show that there was no blood on either one.
“Can you answer a few questions without stinking any more?” Then he felt a slap on his back as Officer Cromwell told him, “Stop that!’ “My goodness, he did the right thing to get her help.”
“Well if you can’t smell this rotten odor, you deserve a medal.” He said as he tried to stare down his partner. He gave a little cough.
“Do I have to report you?”
“No, but”
“One more insult and ..”
The nurse walked in and gave a bottle of water and some cookies to JoJo. He accepted them graciously. The nurse looked at the two policemen. “Hey hold it down you two. This is a hospital that takes care of everyone.”
JoJo came into the room and sat down on the couch. “I told the nurse information. I am staying to see that the little girl is going to be okay.” In the background another siren could be heard. It stopped and many voices were heard shouting in the form of people arguing.
“Oh the ER is going to be busy tonight!” The nursed murmured as she picked up some trash as she got ready to leave. “Oh Mr. JoJo since you want to get information on Miss Autumn, you can be allowed to stay as nearest relative. But we might want to do something about the clothes. I agree that there is a smell here. Maybe we can help.”
“Oh thank you but I would need a larger bag for more clothes. And that would be hard for me to carry.” He gave a shy smile.
“We will work something out.” My husband has been on a diet and you might fit into his old clothes. Anything that is torn and you don’t want can be thrown out. But we need to get approval for you to wash up somewhere.”
JoJo smiled at the thought of washing up and getting more clothes.
“I have lost a little weight since I stopped here. I wouldn’t want your husband to get mad at someone wearing his clothes.” Replied JoJo with a serious look on his face.
“That’s no problem, sir.” She picked up the empty bottle. “He works in an office and the people tease him with the baggy pants and ridiculous shirt-tie selection. He is not interested in fashion appeal, just comfort.”
The two policemen snickered at the way the nurse talked about clothes. The policeman named Foster tried to pull up his pants without anyone noticing. Cromwell turned her head to laugh.
The nurse turned to the officers to frown. “Listen officers, anything that you learn from JoJo may be important in finding the mother of the baby. We need information as well. If the woman is bleeding or sick, or anything wrong, we must and I emphasize MUST be the first to know. She can come here and we will give her a checkup. The health of the mother and child must be respected and confidential. But that baby stays HERE!”
There was a knock on the door. One of the nurses put her head through the door. “Ma’am we have a problem!”
“What now!”
“We need you. It’s Autumn.”
JoJo rushed to the door. The policemen got in his way to keep him from leaving. “Hold on sir. You are going with us.”
“No. My friend Autumn needs me.” He looked at the officer in the doorway. His eyes filled with tears ready to fall.
The nurse reached the door and pulled the Officer’s arm away. “Move it or I’ll break it!”
The female officer tried to move the nurse. “Of course ma’am. We just want to keep JoJo in here.”
As weak as he was, he managed to shout, “NO!” and then rushed under the arm of the officer who was trying to keep him in.
As everyone was rushing down the hall, a nurse was pushing an incubator with a pale, still baby to the emergency room again. Doctors were rushing after her giving her orders what to do. The area looked like a madhouse. And the baby was fighting for her life.
